Aspiring wildlife/conservation vet
Love listening to you guys even if it takes a little bumbling before reaching the bigger juicier topics in vet science. Particularly enjoyed the discussion with David Middleton discussing the philosophy of not compromising ethical values for business in zoos as well as the necessity for providing analgesics for wildlife patients!
Listening in I’ve been inspired to investigate my childhood dream of being a hands-on animal doctor for the pursuit of conservation (aka a wildlife vet). I completed a bachelor of Science (biology 1st class honours) from the university of Wollongong currently working as a research assistant at USYD investigating the molecular mechanisms of epigenetics.
At the ripe old age of 27 becoming a wildlife vet seems like a very long and challenging process (some would suggest impossible) given:
a) the fees of a DVM
b) the over-saturation of veterinarians and competition for positions as a wildlife/zoo vet
c) the volunteering or “internship” roles required to get a foot in the door
If I were to pursue this dream and start a DVM, can you give me suggestions for:
1) which university is best to apply for?
2) how can I maximise my chances of receiving a commonwealth supported place
3) what kind of internships/placements should I aim for during my studies
4) how should I finance my studies with work/what scholarships should I apply for?
5) what are the job prospects for a new vet grad and more specifically for a wildlife/zoo vet?
6) Finally, what advice would you give to your younger self before beginning a degree and career in veterinary medicine?
Easy and informative listening for those long car drives
I really enjoy listening to these podcasts when I'm driving around the country. I learn new info about exotic animal medicine (from two of the best!) and enjoy the friendly banter between the two hosts.
Good job
Fantastic variety of topics from two very smart and funny vets. A must subscribe podcast
