148: Doing Business in the US; Why the US is Sometimes Ahead & Sometimes Behind
How to Do Business in the USWhy the US Is Sometimes Ahead and Sometimes BehindIn this podcast of early December 2020, we talk about recent developments and how different cultures/countries are dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic."Sometimes the USA is ahead of the rest of the world, and sometimes they're behind".Why is it that the US constructed an ultra-modern interstate system in the 1950s, but then let it deteriorate to a point where billions of dollars are needed to bring it back to a decent state? A similar observation applies to other infrastructures, such as airports. At the same time, why is it that companies like Amazon, Google and Apple are so far ahead with industry leading technology? We'll take a look at the COVID-19 pandemic and show how the cultural dynamics surrounding the pandemic are similar to the above mentioned observation of "being ahead and behind." We'll look at this from an international business perspective and add a theoretical framework for the audience to better understand what to expect when doing business with the US.Get Culturally Competent when Doing Business in the USThe main message of this podcast is that if you want to do business with the USA, you will encounter the dynamics of "ahead and behind". To be successful in doing business in the US, you'll need to get culturally competent, even if you're from a comparable culture like the UK! You need to understand how Americans think and work and, of course, how your own culture might impact. Your business success will depend on it!Want to Listen More?Go here to find out more

144: Bart De Pau On the Shocking Dutch
Bart De Pau
About This Week's Guest Bart De Pau
Bart De Pau was born to a Dutch father and a Belgian mother and grew up in Zeeland (the province that is famous for its massive sea defenses).
He set up a Summer/Winter School: intensive Dutch courses with accommodation.
Some years ago, He started to video interviews with the students of the Summer/Winter School in front of a blue background. When foreigners share their experiences, other foreigners can benefit from them.
That was the idea... but it appeared that Dutch people liked to watch foreigners talking about their language and culture even more. Result: 4-5 million views per month on YouTube and Facebook combined.
"The biggest shock to non-Dutch is the Dutch directness"
* Listen to what others say. Don't just be able to hear what they say, but actually listen.
* Explore the differences between you as an expat and your Dutch host; what's the perspective of both parties?
* Talking about language: Learn it!
Links mentioned in this episode are:
* Just go to Google.com and type in: Learn Dutch
