EP 5 (LIVE): Vegan farming and humanure with Joost van Strien

EP 5 (LIVE): Vegan farming and humanure with Joost van Strien

This episode is a special one: it was recorded live with an audience!

We delve into the topic of Vegan Farming with Joost van Strien. He is known as the farmer of Zonnegoed in Flevoland and from No Shit Food. Joost is one of the two (larger scale) vegan farmers in the Netherlands, a true pioneer! Topics like green manure, vegan compost, and innovative cultivation methods, as well as the nutrient cycle in agriculture, are discussed. The latter topic is delved into more deeply with the help of Kimo van Dijk, a researcher from Wageningen University & Research, who enriches us with his scientific knowledge about humanure (=human manure). A discussion is opened with the audience about the statement: “To produce food in a sustainable way, we should transition to humanure and vegan compost instead of chemical fertilizer and animal manure”. Are you curious about the opinion of the audience?

    Tune in and enjoy!

EP 4: Bio-cultural restoration: refostering local roots – with Edo Cáceres Salgado

EP 4: Bio-cultural restoration: refostering local roots – with Edo Cáceres Salgado

How to connect place, culture and economy according to the principles of agro-ecology for present and future generations? How do we refoster our local roots and rebuild a local economy?

Our guest in this episode is Edo Caceres Salgado. With Chilean roots and a strong connection to his ancestral lands, Edo got in touch with agro-ecology and regenerative farming whilst setting up his own farm in Chili. Working there with small holder farmers and indigenous communities has lead him to set up his own company selling natural cosmetics, Mas Newen, and it also gave him a different perspective on place, economy and culture.

In this episode we talk about our roots, our connection to the land that we live on and to the people around us, about bioregions and about creating thriving local economies.

EP 3: Solidarity payment: a fair income for farmers - with Elske Hageraats

How do farmers get a fair income? In this episode we will dive into this important topic together with Elske Hageraats.
Elske worked as a farmer for many years and experienced struggles with earning a fair income. She started doing research and ended up writing a book called Eerlijk Loon, which means Fair Wage. She introduced a different kind of payment method called Solidarity Payment, which focuses on a fair wage for the farmer and which creates a relationship between the producer and the consumer. In this episode she will tell us all about it! At the end of the conversation, we also talk about her course “Agroecology in Practice”, a program that teaches you the practical knowledge and skills to, after one year, start your own agroecological farm. If this interests you, make sure you stay until the end. Tune into the episode and start listening to Elske her wisdom!
