142 Dr Jena Quinn: Tiny Doses, Big Impact: Jena's Paediatric Pharmacy Adventure Pharmacist Diaries

    • Carreiras

In this episode of the Pharmacist Diaries podcast, we are joined by Jena Quinn, an expert paediatric pharmacist. She developed the vision for Perfecting Peds based on her extensive background in medication management of pediatric populations, her personal love for children, and her desire to optimise complex pediatric pharmacotherapy. She has years of safe medication management and direct patient care experience in the pharmacy field with a wide-ranging background in developing, enhancing and managing clinical consulting programs. Jena earned her Doctoral degree with high honours from the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy.

Jena's journey is deeply rooted in her family history and personal experiences, which have fueled her commitment to paediatric pharmacotherapy. We discuss the global impact of paediatric pharmacy, the challenges faced in accurate dosing for children, and the emotional toll of working in palliative care.

Throughout the conversation, Jena and I highlight the scarcity of paediatric pharmacists in the US and UK, emphasising their crucial role in ensuring safe medication practices for children. We delve into topics such as paediatric dosing, weight-based calculations, and the necessity for improved systems to support paediatric pharmacy. Our shared dedication to paediatric care leads us to explore opportunities for collaboration and innovation in this specialised field.

The discussion further delves into the evolution of Perfecting Peds, shedding light on the critical need for enhanced clinical appropriateness and the challenges in gaining state-by-state approvals. We address disparities in paediatric training, the value of collaboration among pharmacists in different healthcare settings, and the initiatives taken by Perfecting Peds to drive change in paediatric medication management.

As the conversation unfolds, we compare healthcare systems in the UK and the US, highlighting the differences in wait times for surgeries, specialist access, and the role of paediatric pharmacists in both countries. We explore the unique practices at the Evelina London Children's Hospital, emphasising the pharmacist's essential role in drug management and multidisciplinary collaborations.

The dialogue extends to innovative approaches in pharmaceutical care delivery, virtual consultations, and the evolving landscape of pharmacist prescribers in the UK. We exchange ideas on growth opportunities, technology integration, and educational enhancements, envisioning a future where paediatric pharmaceutical care is revolutionised through global collaborations and technological advancements.
