    In this episode of the Pharmacist Diaries podcast, I had the pleasure of chatting with Shilpa Patel, a GP practice pharmacist who has taken her career to new heights. Shilpa shared her incredible journey from transitioning from community pharmacy to becoming a GP partner within just two years. She also unveils a secret on this episode that she hasn't yet shared on social media!!



    Throughout the conversation, Shilpa dives into the various projects and opportunities she has spearheaded in her role, showcasing her diverse skill set and innovative approach. From leading a COVID vaccination centre to rebranding her GP practice and improving Google ratings, Shilpa's story is a testament to the endless possibilities within the GP practice pharmacist role.



    We explored how Shilpa's willingness to learn on the job and embrace new challenges has been instrumental in her growth as a leader.     In this episode of Pharmacist Diaries, I had the pleasure of chatting with Shilpa Patel, a pharmacist who made a successful transition from community pharmacy to a GP practice.     Before I dive into the episode itself, let me introduce you to Shilpa. Originally from Norway, Shilpa is proud to be among the pioneering GP pharmacist partners in the UK. With a background of 17-years in community pharmacy and 8 years as a clinical pharmacist, she has garnered extensive expertise in both sectors. Shilpa has cultivated a deep understanding of general practice by leading and mentoring a team of ten pharmacists, effectively guiding them to excel in their roles. She has evolved into a valued leader and is able to identify strengths and weaknesses in staff, colleagues and processes which enables her to deliver clinical services efficiently and effectively.
    In the beginning of this episode, Shilpa shares her inspiring journey of leaving a toxic work environment in community pharmacy to finding fulfillment and purpose in her role as a GP practice pharmacist. We dive into Shilpa's background, where she highlights the importance of reflecting on what you truly want from your career.     The bulk of this episode highlights the value of transferrable skills, resilience, and the ability to multitask that community pharmacists possess, which are essential in a GP practice setting. She shares valuable tips for pharmacists looking to transition to a GP practice, including researching the practice beforehand and understanding its challenges and opportunities.

This resource serves as a training tool for pharmacists entering the field and has been widely utilised by healthcare professionals.

    143 Hibaterrahmane (Hiba) Zitouni: Practicing Pharmacy in the UAE!

    In this engaging episode, Hibaterrahmane (Hiba) Zitouni, shares her unique journey into the pharmacy profession, starting with a serendipitous entry into pharmacy school in the UAE. Hiba earned her Bachelor of Pharmacy in 2023 as an Algerian international student in the UAE,  and is currently navigating the licensure process in the country.  She has been named class valedictorian in her year group which fills her with gratitude for the unwavering support from her mentors, peers, and loved ones who believed in her every step of the way. 

    Her journey thus far has been one of curiosity and discovery,  propelled by exploring novel avenues of contribution as a healthcare provider. Along the way, she has actively participated in various research projects, receiving recognition for her contributions, such as winning the top prize award at the research competition in DUPHAT Furthermore, she is immensely thankful for the excellence scholarships she received throughout all four years of college. 

    During this episode, Hiba provides a detailed account of her academic and practical training, shedding light on the diverse and sometimes challenging practices across different institutions. Hiba emphasises the need for a unified approach in pharmacy, highlighting her resilience and determination in navigating these challenges.

    Our discussion touches on cultural nuances in healthcare, comparing practices in the UAE and the UK, and underscores the importance of adapting to diverse healthcare models. 

    Hiba shares valuable insights into the intricacies of working as a pharmacist in the UAE, including language barriers, networking, and the perception of pharmacists by the public.

    A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to the licensing procedures for pharmacists in the UAE, detailing the complexities and requirements for obtaining licenses based on different Emirates and qualifications. Hiba also talks about her aspirations for further education and the importance of work-life balance, emphasising adaptability and continuous learning.

    Overall, this episode provides a candid exploration of pharmacy practice in the UAE, highlighting the challenges and rewards of working in a multicultural environment.

She has years of safe medication management and direct patient care experience in the pharmacy field with a wide-ranging background in developing, enhancing and managing clinical consulting programs. Jena earned her Doctoral degree with high honours from the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy. 

    Jena's journey is deeply rooted in her family history and personal experiences, which have fueled her commitment to paediatric pharmacotherapy. We discuss the global impact of paediatric pharmacy, the challenges faced in accurate dosing for children, and the emotional toll of working in palliative care.
