How are places named and who gets to name them? When place names are offensive, how can they be renamed? Who and what is represented or excluded in Canada’s differing naming traditions?
Lauren Beck, author of Canada's Place Names and How to Change Them, joins editor Ryan Van Huijstee in a conversation about various kinds of names, the history of naming places, recent and past efforts to rename places, and the naming and renaming practices that are critically examined in her book. -

Promoting and Protecting Indigenous Arts
The Indigenous Futures Research Centre (IFRC) launched an exciting new website on the promotion and protection of Indigenous arts (PPIA-PPAA.CA). This website consists of articles, resources, and other information from a wide range of scholars, Indigenous artists, and community members on issues regarding the cultural expressions of Indigenous peoples and the cultural appropriation of Indigenous practices and arts.
The launch was followed by a panel on Indigenous fashion with NWT born and Toronto-based fashion designer, Sage Paul (Denesuline), visual artist Nico Williams (Aamjiwnaang First Nation), and Kuujjuaq born and Montréal-based fashion designer, Julie Grenier, moderated by Dr. Heather Igloliorte. -
The Iron Ring with Dr. Ann-Louise Howard
This episode of the Iron Ring welcomes Dr. Ann-Louise Howard, Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Human Sciences at Concordia University. With her past experience in high-tech sectors, more specifically the fields of engineering, program management, ethics, and organizational development, she shifted to the world of Academia to research Canadian women engineers' experiences in the workplace.
