The Harpe Brothers (America's First Serial Killers)
From the late 1700s to the very early 1800s, the Harpe Brothers left a murderous trail across several Appalachian (and non-Appalachian) states. They were ultimately found guilty of upwards of 40 murders, and became known as America's first documented serial killers.

The Grafton Monster
In 1964, a local reporter spotted a strange creature while driving home one evening. This creature became known as the Beast of Grafton, aka the Grafton Monster. What began as a random sighting, quickly turned into everything from aliens to monster hunting parties, and now lives firmly in the lore of West Virginia and Appalachia.

The Bostian Bridge Ghost Train
On August 27th, 1891, an ill-fated passenger train plummeted into Third Creek while crossing Bostian Bridge (near Statesville, NC). Some say that it is still, to this day, attempting to make that crossing, time and time again. Can you really hear the train as it jumps the tracks into the creek below?
