We don’t take such a dim view. There’s more to bureaucracy than the dreary reign of rules, files and approvals. We discuss the portrayal of bureaucracy in popular culture in this episode. We talk and talk – of the dry humour in Yes Minister, about Kafkaesque nightmares, on the satire in Krishan Chander’s Jamun Ka Ped, about Harishankar Parsai’s vyangya, of Madna in English August or Travancore of T.S. Pillai and the darkness in Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro.

In Spotlight, we feature Salil Chowdhury – a true renaissance man whose songs, plays, short stories and music lit up the Indian cultural scene for over four decades. Salilda, as he was popularly known, was more than another film music composer. We pay our tribute to him on his 25th death anniversary. We figured a single episode isn’t enough to cover his oeuvre. We will return to him another time.

इस बार के पॉडकास्ट में बात ब्यूरोक्रेसी/नौकरशाही पर, जो हमारी देश की लोकतांत्रिक व्यवस्था का एक जरूरी आधार स्तंभ है। आजाद भारत ने पिछले 73 साल में ब्यूरोक्रेसी के अच्छे और बुरे दोनों चेहरे देखे हैं और जहां एक ओर इस यात्रा में कई बड़ी योजनाओं के सफल क्रियान्वयन के लिए ब्यूरोक्रेसी की व्यवस्था ने महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई है वहीं दूसरी तरफ बहुत कुछ है, जो ठीक नहीं है और सत्ता के विशेषाधिकारों के दुरुपयोग के साथ भ्रष्टाचार और शोषण के उदाहरण भी कम नहीं हैं
