    #39: CLAVVS, with Noods, b3cca

#39: The first concert recap in so very long….Marleah and guest Henry recap CLAVVS (with Noods and b3cca), who they saw at Our Wicked Lady on 7/30/21. Marleah wants a shorts suit and hears jangle punk for the first time. Henry gives Our Wicked Lady a glowing review, and takes note of the hot Noods band members (prompting a discussion on whether it is possible to be twee pop, if you’re also highly attractive). Marleah and Henry agree that yes, it’s been a long, hard pandemic, so support local bands getting back into the groove!

What’s your next concert gonna be? Let us know.

CLAVVS just released their latest album O on 7/29/21, Noods released their debut album Blush on 4/16/21. Check them out!

#38: How Was It For You? Interview With King Crash

#38: How Was It For You? Interview With King Crash

With concerts cancelled, bands make due. No NYC band is making a greater effort than King Crash, probably the first to play out in the city in lockdown. I sit down with Ryan Shivdasani, Jack Redford and Rubio to get an inside look about what it looks like to forge ahead as a performer in lockdown. We talk about the joy of public performances, what the upcoming Open Culture initiative could mean for performers, why the most colorful characters tend to approach Jack, how Ryan doesn't really want to hear Jimi Hendrix everyday, and Rubio gives some insight as to why other bands might be more reluctant to do all that King Crash does.

Also in this episode are mentions of a few other NYC bands that play out (info below).

#37: Lockdown Recap, Part 2: DJs/EDM, with Mindgazm

#37: Lockdown Recap, Part 2: DJs/EDM, with Mindgazm

Alternative Title: But Where Can I Go To A Rave?

In Part 2 of the Lockdown Recap, Marleah is here to discuss the EDM scene in NYC (and tips for finding where to go in your own city if you’re not from around here), with Gregory Gelfand and Jenya Taran of Mindgazm, a local NYC DJ act she got to see twice over the past month, who also add live instruments and visuals to their sets, for a full electronic dance experience. In this conversation, we talk about the duo’s transition from band to genre-fusing EDM act, the expanded sonic palette (how we love this phrase) electronic music lends itself to, the future of melodic dance music, the 20 year NYC music cycle, how DJs are leading the charge in the NYC music scene (Marleah is a little tough on bands here, sorry), what the underground looks like, and how “you really can’t stop people from being tribal”. Plus, a How Was It For You? discussion, where Marleah finds out what the Mindgazm set she saw was like for them (Greg is ok with a little unexpected B2B!). The video version will be posted soon on our IGTV, and Mindgazm’s EP One Funky Evening is set to release on TRAX Records on 11-27-20!

#36: Lockdown Recap, Part 1: Concerts, with David Pattillo of Strange Majik

#36: Lockdown Recap, Part 1: Concerts, with David Pattillo of Strange Majik

It’s been a loooong hiatus, and we’ve struggled for the live music that nourishes us…but it can be found! Marleah is here for the Lockdown Recap, Part 1, Concerts, to discuss the live music scene in NYC (and tips for finding it in your own city if you're not from these parts!). First half, Mar sits down with her friend Ladell who she saw Akie Bermiss with, at Wild Birds. Ladell felt Akie hit his soul and appreciates sci-fi themed tunes. Marleah recalls being raised on Jazzercise and All My Children, and loves a cover that’s better than the original.

Second half, for another How Was It For You? segment, Marleah is with David Pattillo of Strange Majik, who she saw at Culture Lab on September 19. We recap the set, and also hear about background on the band, how ideas float down from the ether, that time David played for Kimye, and lo-fi highs. The video version is getting posted soon on our IGTV!

#35: How Was It for You? Interview With The Values

#35: How Was It for You? Interview With The Values

With quarantine in effect, concerts are out. So we’ve got a new segment, How Was It For You?, where we interview an artist we love on their take on a show (or shows) we went to. On this episode, we get to chat with Evan Zwisler and Mason Taub of The Values!

Mason and Evan get into their intricate songwriting process (they’ve got a bomb home setup, well lit too we’ll add), the energy they bring to their shows, the artists that inspire them, what they’re doing in quarantine (their new single, Quarantine, dropped on April 29!), favorite concerts they’ve attended, and we get a funny little story about their informal first wedding dance.

Marleah talks about the time she didn’t ask for her money back after a Marky Mark show, and recommends Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama for The Values’ next bad movie night. James takes a stand on how he likes his music biopics to be historically accurate, and recalls our first ever show of the band, which turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

#34: How Was It For You? Interview with Eli Sokolow of The Living Strange

#34: How Was It For You? Interview with Eli Sokolow of The Living Strange

With quarantine in effect, concerts are out. So we’ve got a new segment, How Was It For You?, where we interview an artist we love on their take on a show (or shows) we went to. On this episode, we have a fantastic discussion with Eli Sokolow- lead singer, guitarist and songwriter of The Living Strange. We ask about shows of the band that we went to, of course (like when James showed up awkwardly early, and like when Marleah was captivated with Eli’s suave delivery of a new ballad), but also get Eli’s take on the band’s aesthetic, what keeps him busy during quarantine, the importance of putting on a captivating show, Tiger King (because how can you not) and future developments for the band (hint hint, we have an Excluuuusiiiive!).

The Living Strange is releasing new songs and music videos in the coming weeks, so keep up with them on social media for the latest!
