Over 50? Get that next job

Over 50? Get that next job

Its tough out there to find a job. Even harder if you are over 50.

Once they fall out of work, older workers take the longest, and struggle the most, to return to work. According to the Centre for Better Aging "Those over 50 who are unemployed are twice as likely to be out of work for 12 months or more than younger workers and almost 50% more likely than workers aged 25-49. Relying on mainstream back-to-work support for this group will not work".

INDY turned to Adrian Foster-Fletcher author of "Over 50? Get That Next Job" and recruitment expert for advice. Listen for some great thoughts on how to get that next job.

How to take up photography in your 60s and embrace your challenges

How to take up photography in your 60s and embrace your challenges

Mary Humphrey's story is one of reinvention, of bravery and of pushing boundaries (and going where many other photographers might fear to go).

Having enjoyed a fulfilling and successful career in the world of teaching and education, her interest in photography was ignited whilst living in California in her sixties. Her formal photography education started at the College of San Mateo, and on returning to England, she continued her photographic development as a student at the Cambridge School of Art, where she was awarded a 1st Class Honours Degree (2011).

Her objective as a photographer is to  collaborate with those whose stories are neglected.  Her projects have included working with Roma and Gypsy families,  photographing those living on a Cambodian rubbish site and working with the transgender community.

This story of finding a new passion in her sixties, developing an amazing skillset and bringing disadvantaged people to the fore is amazing. Mary also shares some golden nuggets of advice on starting a new interest in later life.

When muscles start to become a pain

When muscles start to become a pain

Don't miss this interview if you struggle with muscle pain.

With my special guest, Soft Tissue Therapist Olivia Daniell at Bristol Soft Tissue Therapy / Sports & Remedial Massage

What We’ll Be Covering on this Episode:

    1) How 20-30 years constantly sitting at a desk can cause patterns of posture that bring discomfort and what to do about it.

    2) How finding something you enjoy doing will make the difference in staying active, supple and pain free in your INDY years.

    3) Where to go for help if you are suffering from muscle discomfort in your 50s or later.

    Olivia’s Story:

Olivia has always been fascinated by movement, how the body works and how to push your body to its limits whilst keeping safe and injury free.  As a b-girl (breakdancer) and former competitive gymnast, she had to overcome numerous injuries herself. Olivia found Soft Tissue Therapy  extremely helpful during these times, which in turn, inspired her to become qualified and use it to help others.

Having experienced the impact that injuries can have on us physically and emotionally first hand, Olivia is especially passionate about increasing awareness of the importance of looking after our bodies and injury prevention whatever our age.

Olivia has a degree in Exercise and Sport Science (BSc Hons) and then later trained and qualified with a Level 5 (BTEC) Diploma in Soft Tissue Therapy (formerly known as Clinical Sports and Remedial Massage). She is also trained in Kinesiolgy Taping (certified by Rocktape UK) and is  a Member of the ISRM (Institute for Soft Tissue Therapists).
