The Iowa Music Showcase is just what the name says, a showcase for Iowa music.

But it is a showcase for ALL of Iowa’s music, regardless of style, genre, decade, popularity, or location.

For the purposes of this webiste and occasional podcast, I am defining Iowa music as music made by a band or artist that was based in Iowa at the time of the recording.

Each week, the blog post will feature some source - like a website, playlist, app, or some such - where you can find and/or hear music from Iowa. If you know any sources, send me an email at iowamusicshowcase@gmail.com.

Every month (sometimes more often), the website will include a podcast that you can download.

For information, questions, criticism, etc, write to me at iowamusicshowcase@gmail.com.

To submit a song, just send an audiofile to iowamusicshowcase@gmail.com.

Iowa Music Showcase - Episode 63: Iowa Country and Folk Music

Iowa Music Showcase - Episode 63: Iowa Country and Folk Music

We have featured both country music and folk music on this podcast before. But to be frank and honest, I have huge backlog of submissions. And by combining them, I can get a bunch finally out of you people, so you can hear them instead of just me!

So mosey on up to the porch, grab a rocking chair, lean back, lift up your poop-kickin boots up, and pull down your cowboy hat, and have a listen to these fine Iowa artists bringing some of that western flavour!

Iowa Music Showcase - Episode 61: Music of Sump Pump Records, Part 1 of 2

Iowa Music Showcase - Episode 61: Music of Sump Pump Records, Part 1 of 2

This month on the Iowa Music Showcase podcast, we present to you a sampling of some of the offerings you can find from Des Moines record label, Sump Pump Records.

This actually started with Chuck Hoffman of Sump Pump sending me a few submissions. So I suggested he send a few more and we could do an episode. He and one of his partners in crime at Sump Pump, Tom Reelitz, ended up sending me enough material for two episodes!

"The story of Sump Pump Records officially begins in 1998 when Dan Hutchison and Bill Heard formed the label to release the debut 7" EP of Why Make Clocks, then a duo of Hutchison and Brian Wiksell. A second release, Chad O'Neal's Evolution No. 9 CD, followed in 2001 before the label went dormant as its proprietors focused on their bands.

"In 2013, Hutchison embarked on a project of his own devising to release a compilation of music from artists based in Des Moines recorded entirely on 4-track cassette. Recording the majority of the tracks himself in his own basement, Hutchison enlisted Wiksell and a few other trusted former members of Why Make Clocks to re-launch Sump Pump Records for its release.

"Since then, Sump Pump Records has produced an eclectic selection of vinyl releases, and amassed a distribution inventory of other releases, largely by artists based in, rooted in, or connected in some way with the label's home state of Iowa, all available through their online store at sumppumprecords.com."

Episode 60: Music from The Iowa Composers Forum

Episode 60: Music from The Iowa Composers Forum

On this episode, we feature four songs from The Iowa Composers Forum, a group for Iowa's classical composers. Each song was picked by the director, Brooke Joyce. He chose four songs he felt represented the range of styles that our classical composers use.

Brooke and I hope that you will enjoy this exploration into Iowa's classical music. If you do, then you might want to check out some of the shows that The Iowa Composers Forum puts on regularly. The latest, Winter Festival of New Music, will be at The University of Iowa School of Music, in Iowa City, on Feb 10th. More information and links are listed below!

Before I go, I just thought I'd let you know that you can listen to and/or get the score for many classical pieces by Iowa composers on their website! Just hit where it says "Catalog"! Here's the link - http://www.iowacomposers.org/?page_id=112

Information on The Iowa Composers Forum:

The Iowa Composers Forum (ICF) was founded in March of 1987 in Des Moines by seven composers who wished to create an environment for the performance and dissemination of music composed by Iowans. Over the intervening years, the ICF has presented more than 100 concerts and tour recitals of works by member composers. These concerts have featured the performances of over 800 works of new music, including works by student composers from the elementary, middle, high school and collegiate level. The ICF has commissioned many new works, both unilaterally and in partnership with other organizations such as the Iowa Music Teachers Association and the Iowa Choral Directors Association. The ICF sponsors its own annual student composition competition, open to students studying at the collegiate level and earlier.

    Each year, we offer:
    - a concert series in the fall

Information on their upcoming festival in February:

The Iowa Composers Forum will host a one-day Winter Festival of New Music in Iowa City on Saturday, February 10. Two concerts will be offered at 3 pm and 7:30 pm in the Concert Hall of the Voxman Music Building on the UI campus. These two concerts will feature new music by composers from across Iowa and the environs, including two young composers commissioned specifically for this festival. Performers include UI faculty, students, and the CNM ensemble.

    Episode 59: Favorites of 2017

    Episode 59: Favorites of 2017

Howdy all! And welcome to Year 4 of this website and podcast! It was 3 years ago on Jan 4, 2015, when the first post and podcast went up.s

Oh, how things have changed! This website was originally just a place to put the podcast. But since then, I've add playlists from Spotify, YouTube, SoundCloud, and BandCamp, and soon ReverbNation, to our repertoire! And also, on the occasional post about Other Sources, you can hear and find Iowa music, like compilation albums, other podcasts, other websites, among other places.

And now, starting since last month, we have added a new interview podcast, Your Own Private Iowa, featuring one- to two-hour interviews from Richard Sutton with Iowa musicians. And once a week, we present a video of a live performance from an Iowa jazz or classical act on Jazzman Joe Videos. And once a month, we present a video of an alternative act on our Fester Rage Videos.

And soon, we will be reprinting Culture Myth articles from former Cityview music writer, Chad Taylor!

So overall, a pretty good year here at IMSC!

But as for this podcast, we present the songs that were YOUR favorites, plus one of mine. This was determined by what posts and podcasts got the most views and/or listens. Then the song to represent that podcast was picked by which song's post on the Iowa Music Showcase Songs websites got the most views.
