In Law Out Loud we turn the table between senior and junior researchers. In every episode, a junior PhD researcher gets the opportunity to explain their research to a senior expert in the same field. The latter seeks to learn from the junior and contribute related insights from their own research. The topics in the series cover legal responses to new social, economic, and technological developments. Law Out Loud is funded by the Erasmus Graduate School of Law, and each episode is produced and edited by EGSL PhD researchers: Liam Wells, Josje de Vogel, Sophia Paulini and Georgia Antonopoulou.

“Economic Insights on Private Adjudication and Collective Settlement”
In episode four, economic analysis of law takes centre stage as PhD researcher Evangelia Nissioti and Professor Louis Visscher from the Rotterdam Institute for Law and Economics discuss new forms of dispute resolution. Ensuring access to justice may be costly for societies, yet without adequate access to justice the incentive effects of law may be weakened. Can equity and efficiency be achieved simultaneously by changing our approach to litigation supported, in part, by the availability of online platforms?

Episode 3: Mathijs and Piebe
“High Frequency Trading in Financial Markets”
PhD researcher Mathijs Giltjes challenges financial regulation expert Piebe Teeboom – Secretary General of FIA European Principal Traders Association (FIA EPTA) - on several issues relating to high frequency trading in financial markets. What is high frequency trading and what role does it play in modern financial markets? Can high frequency trading increase risks for market manipulation or insider dealing in some cases? Is further regulation needed? Mathijs puts these questions (arising out of his PhD research) to Piebe, and is met with some well-argued responses.

Episode 2: Tita and Xandra
“Choice of Law in International Commercial Contracts”
Episode two of Law Out Loud brings together Erasmus Graduate School of Law PhD researcher Priskila Penasthika (better known by her nickname ‘Tita’) and Professor Xandra Kramer, who is an expert in private law and private international law. Globalisation has brought a huge increase to cross border trade in recent decades, and Tita explains the significance of ‘choice of law’ when undertaking cross border transactions. She and Xandra then discuss the case of Indonesia, its aspirations to become the world’s 5th largest economy, and changes which may need to be made to its rules governing choice of law if it is to achieve that goal.

Episode 1: Josje and Johan
“Consumer Protection and Private Lease Models in the Mobility Sector”
In this first episode of Law Out Loud, PhD Researcher Josje de Vogel and Assistant Professor Johan Vannerom discuss the new, and sustainable, phenomenon of private lease models in the mobility sector. They examine the transition from a linear economy to a circular economy and whether this will bring about a disruption to the market which may impact the private law framework. For instance, are private lease contracts sale or services contracts? And how should they be regulated so that consumer protections are not circumvented?
