On the Fringe Grace Owens

Join me as I share my learning and understanding of students who have an Intellectual Disability, as well as what it means to create an Inclusive Classroom. 

Grace Owens and Braden Griffiths brace themselves for a long career of teaching by navigating the tough world of ethical questions. Both podcasters share anecdotes from their practicums and reflect on how their own ethical practices could be improved in their careers as teachers.

Join Grace, Natasha, Pippa and Julia as they deep dive into the 2007 film Freedom Writers starring Hillary Swank. These four teacher candidates look at the inconsistencies and misconceptions present within the cultural representations in the film while simultaneously examining the white saviour story that is being portrayed by teacher Ms. Erin Gruwell in the film. This cutting edge podcast doesn't hold back, and these four women are not afraid to call out this film for what it really is, just another white saviour story. 

This podcast focuses on two articles, ‘Losing an arm’: schooling as a site of black suffering” by Michael Dumas and "How to become less deadly: a provocation to the fields of teacher education and educational research" by Asilia Franklin-Phipps & Courtney L. Rath while examining the very present segregation that still exists in North American schools today. We engage with this topic through the lens of being future educators within the system, as well as with the focal point of The Happy Affect and its harmful nature.
