    PRAMCAST 16: LoPoll // Carnivale // NL

Stimulated by his father’s musical influence LoPoll grew up listening to rock and playing the guitar. He enjoyed his youth this way, but he always felt there was something more to life than sitting under the trees near his house, chewing strands of hay and playing his guitar. The introduction to electronic music proved to be a key moment in his life. On his first rave he experienced the overwhelming effect of Techno on himself, and more important; he noticed the influence a good DJ has on a crowd. Right there and then he realized he wanted to play that role himself. When he came home he traded his guitar for a pair of decks and went out to buy his first records. He practiced and practiced and soon taught himself to mix with three decks. His main influences are techno godfathers such as Jeff Mills, Adam Beyer and Marco Carola, but over the years LoPoll has allowed other styles and artists, mainly from the minimal and tech house side of the electronic spectrum, to influence his style. Which is, nonetheless, still old school, three-deck-loop-techno.

Since his first gig, more than ten years ago, LoPoll felt that for him, the most important aspect of mixing is the transfer of energy from the vinyl, through the speakers, to the crowd. To accomplish this transfer, LoPoll doesn’t simply fuse the separate grooves in the tracks he plays into one continuously kicking set. He interrupts the flow with carefully crafted breaks to keep the crowd on the edge of their dancing shoes with expectation.

Last summer, celebrating his 10 year anniversary as a DJ, LoPoll made the next step in his musical career and started producing his own tracks. While he is still a novice in this field, his first tracks show he has the same approach to producing as he has to mixing; finding a harmony between the pumping kicks of techno and the funk of house.

    PRAMCAST 14: Richard Rowell // Jaunt> // UK

Richard first became interested in the electronic scene in his teenage years, starting up Jaunt> after becoming disheartened with the lack of progressive and forward thinking nights in his area. With a musical taste ranging from the rolling sounds of deep house and techno to disco and straight up house, it’s fair to say his eclectic take on sound is apparent in his energetic and crowd pleasing sets. Ever since seeing the legendary Matthew Dear smash DC10’s dance floor back in 2007, Richard has been seeking out the more educated sounds of the underground scene and developing his own talents tenfold.

Through Jaunt> he has already held the DJ booth fort alongside the likes of Giles Smith, Dyed Soundorom, Miss Fitz and Dorian Paic, adding ever more to his breadth of musical knowledge and untold passion for the DJ scene. And these stellar gigs have already led to separate bookings everywhere from Leeds to London to Ibiza for longstanding nights including Back to Basics, We Love... Space, and via world-class venues such as Digital and Privilege.

Unrivalled experience and success at such a young age can only be admired, and as Richard’s individual music career progresses it’s likely you’ll be hearing a lot more from himself and the now unstoppable Jaunt> movement.
