Keeps getting better!
I started listening to this podcast back in early 2016. I understand not all stories are The Best, but I've heard enough great ones that I keep coming back, and happily keep subscribing to season passes. It's the only podcast I listen to regularly! Plus, it has been encouraging to see how much the show has progressed, both in production and content, and in its respect for its listeners and others who may not be cis, straight, male, etc. The Nosleep Podcast is truly making space to all kinds of horror fans and creators, and I am incredibly thankful for that.
Some people have complained about the show becoming "politically correct," but I only see the creators' effort of making the podcast and its community welcoming to everybody despite differences. Besides, stories that feature unexpected points of view are so interesting! Many of my favorites are from the Pride month episodes (and all CK Walker stories!!!).
Horror can be cathartic, transformative, subversive, an exercise in empathy even, and so much more than just being scared for the sake of being scared. This show proves that by featuring these stories, by showing me I can feel the dread of being outed as trans, even though I'm cisgender. You know? The show and its authors don't rely on horror derived solely from shock value of gore and death. It has those, sure, but they're *part* of a narrative that is scary, and sometimes tragic, but sometimes vindictive or happy or satisfying in its vindictive happiness lol. The stories have acquired many dimensions to them, and it takes guts to write and produce this kind of thing, especially when the genre is commonly regarded as a white boy's exclusive playground. Women, people of color, queer people, disabled people aren't inherently more interesting, of course, but they also have a lot to tell us and to spook us, and I'm happy the Nosleep Podcast is willing to bring us these points of view, these terrors that sometimes are entertwinted with identity, body, and/or culture.
So yeah! I could write an entire essay (someday I will), but I'll just leave this humble review and my most sincere thanks to all who make the show what it is!
