Totally GenX with Jess Jess Smith

Today I’m talking to Carlos. Carlos and I attended middle school and high school together. In previous episodes, I’ve interviewed women who shared soundtracks that in some ways, overlapped with my own. Today, I’m interviewing someone who was a high school friend, however, we hung out in very different circles. So while we share the same hometown and I, along with so many friends, cheered him on in soccer games (our high school men’s soccer team won two state championships), we didn’t really share any music memories together. That’s why  I’m really looking forward to learning more about Carlos’s high school experience through his soundtrack today.

This week I interview Min. Thank goodness we became friends in high school, otherwise I might have ended up in bubblegum pop purgatory forever. To say that Min danced to the beat of a different drum would be pretty accurate, both literally and figuratively. She was always one of my coolest friends and still is today.

Ah, Chelsea. We've been friends for over *cough* thirty *cough* years. And you'd think I'd know everything about her, however, I learned something new about her during her podcast interview. I owe Chelsea a huge thanks, because she is, after all, responsible for introducing me to Pearl Jam. Alas, there's no Pearl Jam on her 5 song soundtrack. But it does include The Gin Blossoms, Counting Crowes, Cypress Hill, Alanis Morrisette, and Garth Brooks. Looking at this list, you can imagine that her CD collection in high school was vast (and it was, I saw it with my own eyes).

Stacy and I were both the “new kids” in 6th grade and were totally frenemies. Other than Facebook, this is the first time I’ve talked to Stacy in about 30 years. It was so much fun hearing about her life after she moved away after 6th grade. Her 5 song soundtrack includes songs by: Dave Matthews Band, Hanson (really), Lisa Loeb, Green Day, and Extreme.
