Mark is the Operations Coodinator for District 14 and is the acting Vice President for the Abitibi Temiscaming Trails Association. We also have Suzy Stenoff joining us. She is the Co-Founder of the Kelly Shires Brest Cancer Snow Run which has raised over $3.5 Million Dollars.

-Hey, I saw a thing on Facebook about a free weekend? How does that work? I am Going up to my Uncles place and I know he has a sled in the garage but I know he doesnt  really use it anymore?

-The Richmond Rover’s Poker run,in  Munster, ON – Registration is from 9-11 .  The cost is $25.00 -The event will leave from Danby’s bar and grill at 2858 Munster Road.   
–Ice Drags on Moira Lake, in Centre Hastings, ON
1st drag off the line at 9am sharp. Gate entrance fee is $10 per person. Registration forms online or onsite from 7am to 8:30am. Race entries $20 per/class.A Cash prize is being awarded for  “King of the Hill.”
-The Maple Leaf Snow Skimmers are hosting their Poker Run, in Lake St. Peter, ON

List of OFSC Club Events This Weekend
 
Hi there, Krusty, and Yukon a shout out to you too LebSled George I’m going to start the show with 2 Saturday Snowaramas.
The first in Morrisburg, ON, begins with a $5 breakfast that is, OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. It will be served from 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at the Riverside Recreation Hall (13137 Riverside Drive, Riverside Heights). Participants are required to have a valid trail permit and must raise a minimum of $25 in pledges. For more information, please contact Leslie at 613.652.1651
The 2nd is the Sudbury Trail Plan event. You can Enjoy a full day of fun with your family and friends on the trails and help kids at the same time. This year’s event will be hosted by the Broder Dill Snowmobile Association and starts at the Colonial Inn, 28 Cedar Street, Coniston, ON. Registration will be open from from 9 am – 2 pm. The snowmobile ride will take place from 10 am – 2 pm, followed by prizes. A complimentary lunch will be available from 12 noon – 3 pm for all participants. I bet you never thought Poker and Snowmobiling had a lot in common, but this weekend they do. Along with the other events I’m going to mention, there are TEN that are Poker Runs!! So if you love to sled and poker’s your thing…then this might just be YOUR weekend.
Starting with the Rideau Grand Poker Rally, Be part of the North Gower Winter Carnival and it’s100 mile poker run. Sign up at 9:30am-12:30pm. $25 to enter. Winning hands will be awarded at 5pm that evening. Cash prizes of 500, 300 and 200 dollars for the top 3 hands..
The West Carleton Snowmobile Trails Association is also hosting their Charity Poker run. Starting with breakfast at the Kinburn Community Centre from 8-11am. $6., Registration starts at 10am sharp. $25 per sled (includes dinner for one). Dinner only is $10 per person. $5 for additional poker hands. The Ride leaves at 11am. There will be winter activities throughout the day and it will be followed by dinner at 6pm with a cash bar (opens at 3pm). Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, oldest/youngest riders and more. The Rice Lake Snow Drifters “Low Cost-High Winnings” Poker Run, is also on Saturday. join the fun and Ride the trails to Elmhirst Resort. For more information contact Sherri Luff at 705-295-4321.
The Elmira S.C. is offering Cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd based on 50% of the entry fee. Registration is from 9-11am. $15 per hand. Refreshments will be available at the clubhouse following the run. Call 519-501-7594 for more information.
Just a note that the Haliburton Country Snowmobile Association’s Poker Run that was scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled.

Paul asks….What is freestyle Riding?
Jeff Explains that freestyle riding as Professional riders doing different sort tricks and maneuvers off of an engineered ramp. Jeff says he has done some of this riding before. Jeff says he got into snowmobiling due to his drive to explore nature and what it has to offer and going where no one else has gone before.
Paul Asks what Free Riding is?
Jeff says free riding is riding without boundaries and exploring where no one has gone before without being on track or trail. What is the Proper place to go Free Riding? Jeff Explains that there is thousands of KM of Crown land available for freeriding. Jeff says to be responsible and not to ride on private property without permission. Paul Asks what is the best sled for off trail? Jeff says that the Snowmobile industry has helped us riders find the perfect sled for our needs. There are Crossovers models for riders that like to ride on and off trail. Some people Prefer a trail sled like an Ski Doo MXZ while others like riding a Mountain sled like a Ski Doo Summit. Paul says that he was in the Abitibi Canyon and got stuck pretty good with his short track sled. Dave says he was up in the Abitibi canyon and Bill Was his tour guide. Bill Explains that he offers a trip to James Bay where you Start in Cochrane then to the Abitibi Canyon for gas then the Abitibi river leading to Moosonee and on to J[...]

Last week lots of snow was spread across the province
Some great sledding could be had across much of the province during the first week of January!

 
 Upcoming Snowmobile Events
Hi there, Krusty, and Yukon and welcome to you, Luc and Mike.  It sure is great to be back after the holidays.  The early season events are just pouring in with all this great snow, and even after mother nature gave a shot at a January thaw, it looks like we aren’t in too bad shape at all,  so here’s what I have for this weekend coming:
For District 1 on Jan 18 we have the K&P Trails, Snow Road Dinner and Auction.  It’s being held at 7:00 at 1106 Gemmil’s Road, Mississipi Station, Ontario   You can call 613-278-2022 for more information.


On Jan 25th in District 2, you can join up with the  Old Hastings Snow Riders President’s Ride,  in L’Amable, Please call: 613 332-6125 for more info or look on the webpage at www.bancroftoldhastings.com


As we move west along the guide, the Long Sault Ridge Runners of District 3 are having 2 consequitve events on the 18th and 19th of January.  First, on the 18th they are hosting their  Annual Poker Run,  and on the 19th, it’s their Pancake breakfast.   Both events are being held at their clubhouse.  Go to www.longsaultsnowmobileclub.com and click on their events page for more information and times.
Also on the 19th  , The Warwick Snowmobile Club of District 5 is holding their Poker and Radar Run, in Watford, ON   Please check their website at www.warwicksnowmobileclub.com for more info or for a weather date if their trails happen to be closed.
District 6’s  Missing Link Snowmobile Club is having their “Open Sesame” Poker Run and Dinner, on January 18th in Stonecliffe. ON  They are offering up cash prizes and more at the stonecliffe Township Hall

Snowmobile Trails Opening All Over Ontario

Question of the week is from Sue Chayer from Mementos in Ottawa who asked
“Can you please remind riders that volunteers are doing their best in many cases to open trails.  And I was wondering if you could remind riders about some of the reasons that some trails might take a bit longer to open even though there is snow on the ground?”
Many areas have different reasons such as

Crops / Winter Wheat / Live Stock still in fields
Swamps have snow insulating them making them take longer to freeze
Ice conditions can be a factor when lakes or rivers are involved
Landowners and municipalities may impose restrictions
Signage may not have been completed on all snowmobile trails
Too much snow at one time can make it difficult to groom with hidden obstacles
Trees may be down in some areas which are not accessible until the swamps are frozen and snow is on the ground
Lack of volunteers in many clubs
Training of volunteers for Risk Management, Signage and Groomer Operators
Many crops are still drying in the fields on snowmobile trails

Weather Report

Last week lots of snow was spread across the province
12 inches in the Ottawa area with snowmobile trails starting to open
Environment Canada has issued a weather statement for Southern Ontario
More snow coming
David Emms reported many small accumulations with have collected to around 12 inches on the ground
Cheryl Reid reported quite a bit of snow in her area
The have packed their snowmobile trails before the rain which has resulted in a 15-20 cm base on their trails with nice powder pack on top
All snowmobile trails except one are open in her area
Consistent temperatures being reported
Frost is working itself in well which will help for late season riding
