"Fitness in Motion" aims to connect the relationship between how the body was designed and what we are doing with it. As your host, I will discuss about my journey as an Exercise Physiologist fresh out of grad school, to a Personal Trainer in your every day gym. Through the discussions about my personal experiences and knowledge, paired with those from guest appearances, "Fitness in Motion" will help to offer advice, resources, and maybe a little humor to help those wanting to achieve their health and fitness goals. In a world that claims to be thorough, I hope to be helpful.

    Ep. 10: Sleep Deprivation

    Ep. 10: Sleep Deprivation

In today's episode, we discuss the effects of sleep deprivation on the body and how it can impact our overall health and fitness program/approach. If you feel you are not getting optimal sleep, it is important to identify why your body lacks the ability to use sleep as a physiological reset and recover time. Sometimes it is helpful to go over some tricks and techniques leading up to your routine wind-down before bed to start improving your sleep quality.
I share some of my opinions and information on sleep deprivation, but I also have been totally consumed in the works of Dr. Matthew Walker, so I was excited to share some of his work and insight in today's content. Dr. Walker is an English scientist and professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. His professional work primarily focuses on the subject of sleep and its impact on longevity and human health. I wanted to use this episode to share some of his knowledge and elaborate on some of the informative interviews he has had with Peter Attia, MD (Canadian-American physician known for his practice that focuses on the science of longevity and whom I have mentioned in previous episodes).
It is easy to talk about how important sleep is, but sometimes it is just as easy to push it to the back burner and not put any steps forward to improving it. I hope that today's episode gives you some actionable items and encouragement to improve your own sleep so that you can all continue putting your fitness into motion.

Ep. 9: PPCCMM --- Cardio Training and Deep Squats

Ep. 9: PPCCMM --- Cardio Training and Deep Squats

In today's episode, I answer two questions that were sent my way: 1) "How can I enhance my cardio training?" and 2) "Is squatting below parallel bad for my knees?".

I have had many personal experiences with these two topics, bringing me all the way back to when we were performing indirect calorimetry tests almost every day back in grad school, to the more recent years when I have performed and studied "deep squats" more myself. I hope these topics interest you as much as they have for me. Feel free to reach out with questions yourself and you might even see them in a future PPCCMM episode (Personal Points / Coach's Corner / Motivational Monday). Thank you FIM Fam!

Ep. 8: Fat Flux and Dunning-Kruger Effect

Ep. 8: Fat Flux and Dunning-Kruger Effect

In today's episode, we dive into the biochemistry of fat flux and lipolysis. What happens to an adipose cell when our bodies increase fat tissue? Why is it so difficult to decrease fat tissue?
We also touch on the Dunning-Kruger Effect and its application to absolute knowledge vs. perceived knowledge. How can this be helpful when getting us to our health and fitness goals? How can this be detrimental when searching for information on certain topics?
***Several examples and concepts in today's episode were inspired by Peter Attia, MD and his podcast "The Drive". I highly recommend that you check out his content, especially the research and information he has gathered alongside Bob Kaplan, Head of Research at Attia Medical, PC.
Like always, I appreciate all of you out there who are part of the FIM Family! Let's keep learning and applying our knowledge to help the world put their fitness into motion!

Ep. 7: PPCCMM - How Should We View Body Fat? How Should We View The Gym?

Ep. 7: PPCCMM - How Should We View Body Fat? How Should We View The Gym?

Today's episode will be our first PPCCMM (Personal Points / Coach's Corner / Motivational Monday). This means we have a very relaxed conversation about some topics where I share some personal points, opinions, and coach's concerns on this fine Monday.

This won't be jam packed with as much research data or sciencey education as regular episodes, but I hope it still offers some content that will help all of you put your fitness into motion. Thanks again for tuning in, FIM Fam!

Ep. 6: Let's Talk About Stress

Ep. 6: Let's Talk About Stress

    Welcome FIM Fam!

In today's episode, we talk about stress and what types of stress might be affecting our ability to get to our health and fitness goals. It is hard not to talk about stress without mentioning Cortisol, so we definitely dive into that. I wanted to deliver a more informative type of episode to get the brain juices going on what actually is happening in our bodies when adapting to stressors.

I know this is a very talked-about topic, but here is my take on what stress is doing to our bodies and what we should consider when chasing those goals!

Ep. 5: Should You Be Doing 'Resistance Training' AND 'Cardio Training' At The Same Time?

Ep. 5: Should You Be Doing 'Resistance Training' AND 'Cardio Training' At The Same Time?

In today's episode, we try to answer the question: Should we be doing resistance training and cardio training at the same time?

    .

To start answering this long-lived question, we introduce some evidence-based research, some real-world examples, some weird tangents, and some practical recommendations to get your brain juices going so you have a better understanding on how you can continue putting your fitness into motion. What is the SAID Principle? What is Concurrent Training? Why should I be doing what I'm doing? Knowledge is power and being tactical can be practical.

    .

Thank you FIM Fam for tuning in! I will be releasing episodes every 2 weeks on Monday's, so keep following along! Stay active, stay safe, stay healthy, and keep putting your fitness into motion.
