26. SLP CORNER - SNACK: Bilingualism and Autism with Dr. Marinova-Todd SLP Corner

    • Education

When episodes are labelled SLP CORNER - SNACK it just means that it is a shorter version of my regular podcast that offers bite sized information that is interesting and worth a discussion.

Dr. Stefka Marinova-Todd is joining us again today to discuss all things bilingualism and children with special needs. Dr. Marinova-Todd is a developmental psycholinguist with her main research interests being bilingual language development and second language acquisition. Dr. Marinova-Todd is an Associate Professor at the School of Audiology and Speech Sciences at UBC and is currently an Associate Editor at Applied Psycholinguistics, and is on the editorial board at Language, Speech and Hearing Services in Schools which is an ASHA journal.

We cover questions such as:
- Are there differences in early language development between monolingual and bilingual-exposed young children with autism?
- If a child has autism, and the parents first language is not English, which language should they speak to their child in and why? Should parents speak in a language they aren’t fully proficient in?
- If a child has special needs should they still be learning another language if their siblings are but the parents L1 is English?
