Podcast Review with Love

Adlandia’s bi-weekly interview-led podcast focuses on the leading trends happening in the advertising and marketing industry. Each episode, the podcast brings in industry professionals to share about their journey and how they challenge the “same old” thinking to become successful.

The podcast has been running for 10 months with their first episode in February 2017. The two hosts, Laura Correnti and Alexa Christon, bring forth new perspectives about business models, ideas and platforms. Both women have an extensive background in business marketing, creative media and are considered to be Madison Ave’s “most disruptive female voices”.

The episodes range from 40 minutes to an hour in length. The co-hosts begin each podcast by introducing the topic for the episode. Laura and Alexa then share their own opinions before inviting the guest to participate in the discussion. The engaging discussion covers questions such as whether certain trends are effective or not and how companies can improve.

The episode, “Moving at the Speed of Culture,” Laura and Alexa rant for 15 minutes about what has been inspiring them in their lives and how they apply it in their everyday lives. The cohosts raise the question about how to best tackle plans based on real-time feedback. Despite reports, the industry needs to be a cultural student and aware of creative branding. Piers Fawkes, Founder of PSFK, shares how the industry’s measurements don’t account for the work being done today and where it’s headed.

The following episode, “Don’t Delegate Your Story with Beth Comstock,” the two women interview GE Vice Chairwoman, Beth Comstock, who’s had major impact on the business and marketing industry. Beth Comstock has worked with both Laura and Alexa, and it’s evident how much she inspires them throughout the episode. Beth shares awesome insight on how to navigate one’s own creative career and how to stand out as a great leader.

The content of the podcast discusses topics for those only interested in business and marketing. It is not for everyone. Some topics are far more interesting than others because of its currency. However, the hosts do a great job and dumbing down the terminology and statistics for every day individuals to follow.

The interviews are interesting, because the professionals share their input by relating it to their own personal experiences. The interviewees are humble and honest, which is a refreshing take on the modern business professional stereotype. The input of the interviewees is always relevant and provide strong points on how the industry is advancing in the topic of discussion.

The podcast does not focus on a specific narrative. It is conversational discussion. The questions asked are thought provoking and can be extended to the listener to reflect upon.

I like the co-hosts, Laura and Alexa, because they have contrasting personalities. Laura is more sarcastic whereas Alexa is more optimistic. The balance is a nice dynamic that keep the show lively and entertaining.

A recurring advertisement that played for each episode was for FreshBooks. It is a cloud accounting software tailored for small businesses that struggle to be organized when dealing with finances. It’s a good match because it deals with small business and properly manages a company in an efficient way. I did not want to skip the ads because they were not long. The hosts did a good job at relating the product to their content and explain how it would be beneficial for listeners to subscribe to the product.

The podcast Adlandia challenges the traditional thinking of sticking to the “way it’s been done”. It creates engaging and insightful content relating to advertising and marketing. However, it is dedicated to a specific niche and target audience.

As much as I thought that this would be geared toward pop culture and social trends, it discussed more complex aspects of business that I was unfamiliar with. However, the podcast does a good job at navigating through the issues and successes of the marketing industry. Laura and Alexa include great interviews by asking compelling and engaging questions.

I would rate the podcast a 3 out of 5.
