    The man who is fighting for his spot for the most guest appearances on BAOS is back to defend his title from Shehan De Silva. Derrick Robertson of Montreal's BreWskey jumped on the pod with Cee and Nate for a deep dive into his thoughts on the various new hop products and the different uses for them (like Hyperboost vs Dynaboost), the American tariff situation and the potential for opening up beer sales across Canada, the importance of water profiles for beer, their 10 year anniversary for the original BreWskey brewpub, how his beers have changed since their contract brewing days, his influence on Zach from Bad Bones, the proper pronunciation of New Zealand hops, how they all drink triple IPAs, and why doing podcasts are great for him to be able to really soak up his beer.     It's always a pleasure to give flowers to the OG breweries as they paved the way for the industry we all know and love today, so we were stoked to finally get the folks from Steam Whistle (and Beau's) on the pod. President Bromlyn Bethune and Brewmaster Erica McOustra joined Cee and Nate to chat about the Steam Whistle story, why they continue to do one thing really, really well, the expansion to other styles (and the retraction), the acquisition of Beau's and the impact Beau's has had on the craft beer industry in Canada, how they've been able to transition Beau's recipes to the larger Steam Whistle system, their partnership with New Belgium and why they've moved on from that setup, how they've been able to innovate and continue the Beau's brand, and their take on the current tariff situation.     To celebrate the 10th anniversary of this humble craft beer podcast, we're doing something we've never done before: throwing a beer festival. It's quite the story how it all came about, so we brought in our partner on the project, Erica Campbell, Sales Manager of Blood Brothers Brewing and Co-Founder of the Society of Beer Drinking Ladies, to chat about her illustrious history in the beer industry and voluminous experience throwing events. We then did a deep dive into the genesis of the Get It In Ya Fest concept and the ton of collabs, how we've approached the festival, the importance for us of having minimal wait times for pours and no overcrowding, the way the festival is going to work, the food and entertainment, the types of beer you can expect, and we ran through all 40 (FORTY!) of the collaboration breweries to go into how they all came about.     One of our favourite beer scenes on the planet is the glorious state of North Carolina, and this past winter, we were lucky enough to visit twice. On the way down to Florida, we swung by Raleigh, NC, and our first stop was Funguys Brewing, an innovation-driven spot that came highly recommended by friend of the show, Will Cleveland. Cee hung out with Nick and Carly to chat about the North Carolina scene, their homebrew beginnings in Pittsburgh, PA, their love for Mac Miller and their annual dedicated releases, their take on the longevity of different styles, their favourite hops, their fun approach to smoothies and seltzers, why their beers always have a story, and their upcoming seventh anniversary releases.     Back in November of 2024, Cee and Tiff held a session at the Ontario Craft Brewers Conference with Jonathan Barraball of Royal City and Ram McAllister of Fairweather Brewing in Hamilton, ON.     Kitchener, ON is a tight-knit brewing scene, and one man has been a pillar of the community for around a decade now. Rob Hern launched Short Finger Brewing in 2019 after running a successful home brew shop out of the same space, and he jumped back on the pod after two years to catch Cee and Nate up. They touched on his love for his "bastard Gueuze", why he transitioned from a home brew shop to a brewery, his connection with Bebo from Third Moon, how he curates his taproom lineup, the full story behind Pulp (his legendary collab with the now-defunct Barncat Artisan Ales) and successful launch event, his Eisbock collab with the also now-defunct Half Hours On Earth, his relationship with Arabella Park, the story behind their flagship Lando, and they also talked about the Short Finger x BAOS collab for the BAOS 10th Anniversary this spring.     Episode #9: What Do Trump's Tariffs Mean For Canadian Craft Beer? with Shehan De Silva (Lost Craft / High Park / Local Spirits) | The Business of Beer

    With the recent announcement of 25% tariffs on Canadian goods in the USA by President Trump, and the subsequent retaliatory tariffs on American goods in Canada by Prime Minster Trudeau, the craft beer industry is arguably the most aggressively affected. Thankfully they were paused for 30 days in early February, however, it felt right to do a deep dive into what they are, and what they mean for the industry. Shehan De Silva of Lost Craft, High Park and Local Spirits joined Cee (who is currently in Florida) to how the tariffs will affect key beer products including aluminium and hops, how it affects the supply chain, how it will affect the US and Canadian industries differently, they touched on the impact that Canada's high taxes have on the beer industry, trade barriers internally, large brewer monopolies, and how negative press continues to degrade an already suffering industry. Since this wasn't a planned pod, the beers weren't matched up but Shehan got into Lost Craft's Old School Pilsner and Espresso Stout, while Cee rocked Burial's Donut Skillet Stout and Other Half's BA Double Sunset - Cloud Cover Layo Terage stout.     One good thing to come out of the pandemic in Ontario was the ability for existing businesses to add a craft bottle shop element to their offerings, and it's about time we did a deep dive for this series. Chris Redmond of Durand Bar & Bottle Shop in Hamilton, ON, and Marc Lecompte of Sidewalk Beer Shop in Waterloo, ON, joined Cee and Nate to talk about the law change and how it works, their approach to curation, how they work with breweries, what they can and can't sell, the much-debated pricing structure for indie stores, any impacts from other beer and wine sales points, challenges with breweries and shipping, how they set up their fridges, and what they think the future holds for independent bottle shop. They got into four expertly-curated beers from breweries that can regularly be found in both of their stores: Sonnen Hill RGLR Beer Lager, Fine Balance Oats & Honey (HBC 1019), Badlands Fog (2024), and Third Moon Each Beast A God Coffee Stout (El Salvador Washed Red Bourbon).
