EP 218: Hunting with Elk Decoys - In Depth with Danny Farris
One of the best tools in your elk hunting toolbox is a decoy. Combine a decoy with your calling and you have just satisfied the two out of the three senses that an elk depends on to make a decision. Many times, just what you need to convince a wary bull or turn a hung bull into a shot opportunity and punched tag.
Danny Farris of Ultimate Predator Gear joins the crew to talk in-depth about elk hunting with decoys. The ElkBros, especially Joe has decades of experience with elk decoys and Danny has been a self proclaimed "decoy geek" since the 90's. Topics covered include different types and styles of decoys, why to use decoys and what makes them effective, the difficulties people have had with decoys, how to use them when solo or with a partner, how to use the Stalker decoys in different situations and conditions, possible failure points to avoid, along with several tips and tricks to help you succeed. Hunting with kids
I love listening to this podcast and listen while I’m driving at work around Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan. I have two boys, 6 and 8 years old, that love hunting with me. They have been with me for several successful trips but it’s always been stressful trying to keep them quiet enough in the bush. After listening to the podcasts about the inaudible noises like raking and pawing the ground, how calves get away with more noise and the cow party, I figured I could make it work for this fall with the boys. I bought my boys a couple of calf hoochi mamas and bought myself a couple of the elk bros sugar and grinders calls.
This archery season my boys and I went out and they loved being able to call, kick the ground and rake the trees. We called in a few bears the first couple days but thankfully we are all pretty used to bears up here and the boys love scaring them off, unfortunately we may have spooked a couple elk out of the area too, but better safe then sorry. After the third day we called in a nice satellite 4x5. We had just finished a cow party calling set when we heard him cracking through the bushes and we’re able to set up on him. He came in perfectly at 40 yards and I was able to shoot him right at his stop and scan point.
This podcast has been a game changer and the information is gold. I love my sugar calls and my boys love being able to make more noise.
