Great podcast
Great podcast, such an interesting story. Loved the theme song it’s an ear worm I have been singing for days.
Great stories
Great stories but very very difficult to listen to the narrator I feel like she’s changing her voice to make her self sound younger plus the tone of her narration is grating to my intelligence
But I love the parents and the characters so I can withstand the narrator
An interesting take on mid/late-century California
I guess if I binge listened to this podcast, it should get 5 stars.
I was in Jr. High in Santa Barbara in the early 70s. It seemed that every other Friday afternoon in Grade 9, we had an ambulance at school for an overdose - probably not the truth, but it felt that way. There was a lot going on everywhere. The US was losing it's innocence fast. There was a war. There were lots of drugs around. There was tension - even a darkness in the air.
Life felt scary to me, and for their part, the carnage I witnessed from drugs and terrible choices helped me stay clear of that culture. i had the luxury of being a little younger and observing from a few steps behind.
It's interesting to me that all the ideals and "freedom" from the generation that was going to change the world, has landed us in the world we have now. Those in the generation coming up have just as much disdain for what we've become, and the world we're giving them. History has a knack for repeating itself. "When will they ever learn...?" - from a popular folk song we sang back in my Jr. High choir. I hope this generation will learn since, as well intentioned as we all were, we didn't.
We are no better than those we may have condemned - as wrong and corrupt as things were. For any gains that were made, it seems it was fragile progress at best. We thought we'd be farther along than we actually are at this point, but it seems it won't take much to tip the balance.
The theme song nails the Dead vibe perfectly, but it's tighter than the Dead ever were. (Maybe if I'd seen them live I would have a different opinion, but they never won me over.) Sit back and enjoy that nice theme song pocket. The lyrics become more evident the more episodes you listen to.
