Talking Dateline: In the Matter of Alex Murdaugh

Andrea Canning sits down with Dateline producers Carol Gable and Haylee Barber to discuss Craig Melvin’s latest episode, “In the Matter of Alex Murdaugh.” In June of 2021, the wife and son of prominent South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh were found shot to death in the back of their family estate. One year later, Murdaugh was indicted for their murders. He pleaded not guilty. His trial began in January 2023 and was labeled "the trial of the decade" by local news outlets. A jury found him guilty, and he was sentenced to serve life in prison. But last week, the South Carolina State Supreme Court overturned the convictions citing conduct on the part of court clerk Becky Hill that denied Murdaugh a fair trial. Haylee and Carol share what it was like to learn such major news on a case they’ve been covering for years. Andrea shares an extra clip of Craig discussing the overturned verdict with Murdaugh’s defense attorneys. Plus, Haylee and Carol answer your questions from social media. Too hard to find a simple’Dateline’ show

I love listening to Dateline but when I go to find a basic episode now, there are five or six different shows all showing under the show Dateline. Why can’t you list the shows separately so it doesn’t take 5 hours to find a normal Dateline show??

Could you please tab your years for quicker access to OLD episodes?? Once I listen to one from 2023 and get out, it takes me back to 2026 and scrolling back to 2023 is annoying. Love the content, just make it easier to access. Thanks!

I appreciate the Talking Datelines and the weekly case updates. With the premium there are so commercials and the extra content and episodes are worth it. I love knowing what cases are in the news are how they are being investigated in real time with the professional analysis. And as a Canadian, I love how they included Canadian cases too.

I recently signed up for Premium because I like the show and most importantly it does not have the background music that I find so annoying in too many podcast. But today’s episode unfortunately did have music for the first part, so much so that you can hardly hear what’s happened. Why??? Why do you need to be just like all the others when it was working so well??? I didn’t even listen to the rest, so disappointed. I will see how it goes for the next week or so but if they continue with those stupid sounds I’ll cancel the subscription and unfollow.
