A selection of four essential articles read aloud from the latest issue of The Economist. Our cover story in most of the world this week explores the route to peace in the Middle East. The Weekend Intelligence: The land of the future

In recent years the far north of Sweden, best known by outsiders for its snow and reindeer, has gained a new reputation – as the engine of the green transition. We travel to the town of Kiruna to see the price of this progress and how it is transforming the land.

The Intelligence: America’s culture wars brought to bears

The Intelligence: America’s culture wars brought to bears

In the American West, grizzly bears are spreading—and fights over protecting them under the Endangered Species Act test the frontiers between science and politics. Vaping is tremendous business in Britain, but the largely unregulated industry is now, curiously, asking for more oversight (10:57). And our language columnist explains our word of the year for 2023 (17:47).

Checks and Balance: COP to it

Checks and Balance: COP to it

America has an ambitious climate agenda. But it’s also the world’s biggest producer of fossil fuels. How do those things go together? And as COP 28 continues, how much does the rest of the world need America to be engaged in climate diplomacy anyway?

John Prideaux hosts with Charlotte Howard and Idrees Kahloon. They’re joined by The Economist’s Oliver Morton and Vijay Vaitheeswaran. Sonia Aggarwal, who advised Joe Biden on climate policy and is now CEO of Energy Innovation, also contributes.

    The Intelligence: Putin’s growing advantage

    The Intelligence: Putin’s growing advantage

Even before America’s tussle over funding Ukraine’s war effort, it seemed as if Russia was gaining the upper hand—by exploiting Ukraine’s widening political cracks. A drought-induced traffic jam in the Panama Canal will only get worse in the coming dry season, and consumer-price rises look inevitable (10:42). And to save Britain’s heritage pig breeds, consumers should eat more of them (17:48).

Hosts: Alice Fulwood, Tom Lee-Devlin and Mike Bird. Guests: Rachana Shanbhogue, The Economist’s business affairs editor; Tom Keatinge, financial crime expert at the defence and security think tank Rusi; and Elizabeth Rosenberg, assistant secretary for terrorist financing and financial crimes at the US Treasury.

Unable to link Apple Podcast to Economist + subscription

Upgraded iOS to 17, but the “already a subscriber” does not work at all, either trying from the Economist + main menu (which always leads me to Economist’s own podcast app) or from a subscriber only episode. So frustrated. Plus never received the follow up email about how to activate the subscription, although the subscription confirmation email said they would do so…
