Black to the Future (Pt.1) with Dr. Cherise Smith & Michael Ray Charles

Black to the Future (Pt.1) with Dr. Cherise Smith & Michael Ray Charles

We have a great conversation with Dr. Cherise Smith, a professor of art history and Chair of the Department of African & African Diaspora Studies at UT Austin and author of Michael Ray Charles: A Retrospective, which surveys his career. We also welcome the subject of said book, artist Michael Ray Charles, whose work and research deal with how African Americans have been viewed and portrayed throughout history, particularly through racist stereotypes such as Aunt Jemima, and how that causes them to view themselves.
