In the beginning: “Second Helpings, Please!”

To celebrate 50 years of the iconic “Second Helpings, Please!” cookbook, Norene caught up with one of the founding contributors, Harriet Nussbaum. Up until recently, Harriet’s address had always been at the back of the book, making her the point of contact for orders and questions from around the world. She joined Norene to reminisce about how this fundraising project launched Norene’s culinary career, and how SHP! stands the test - and taste - of time.

Norene’s kitchencast. Its all about the honey

Although I have some smattering of knowledge about how bees are raised, it was interesting to note more detail. Where to start...that you can actually purchase hives, that different types of honey are derived from different flowers or that there is actually something called avocado honey.
Of course as a sometimes ‘zoftig’ guy, honey cake has always interested me.
How sweet? how moist? the other background flavours? Slivered almonds.
The fact that you can still do your day job and raise bees at the same time was new to me. I always thought it was a full time job.
All in all, the podcast kept me awake, although, I was hoping it would overcome my insomnia and lull me back to sleep.
I listened to another podcast, not sure which episode as I was bleary-eyed, deep into the depths of “almost-sleep”.
Originally from Montreal and of a certain age, I remembered the origins of ‘Second-helpings’ and the excitement amongst the young women about its being newly published.
I’m looking forward for Norene’s next podcast.
