Artist Interview: Alex Anastas - Almost Fridays 10/06/21

Artist Interview: Alex Anastas - Almost Fridays 10/06/21

Alex Anastas will be creating live art, you can take home this week https://fb.me/e/4hVlH8s3U Friday, 10th June at Almost Fridays s02e05! Come along from 6pm to see what happens when the worlds of indie music, visual arts, and electronic music collide with extreme prejudice. Come join the family.

Alex Anastas & Ryan chat moleskins, creativity, what it’s like to do live artwork at Almost Fridays, donation wars, being an ex-pat New Yorker, living in Sydney, live remixing, making art without a net, and generally get along as well as you would expect, when a bush-fire meets a brush-fire.

Keep an eye on Alex’ instagram to stay a-full-breast of his adventures.

Alex Anastas was born and raised just outside of NYC, but has lived in Sydney off and on since 2006. Dabbling in a bit of everything with art over the years, he mainly makes art based around the concept of synesthesia. Often this manifests itself as literal but gestural real-time sketches in pen while at concerts. If it is a 2 set affair the second set will be more surrealist expressive as to what is being felt from the music. In recent times, Alex has been commissioned to make live art at concerts by the promoters, venues and musicians themselves.

The music you heard on this episode is from Really Nice.

Artist Interview: Chris Neto - Almost Fridays 15/04/21

Artist Interview: Chris Neto - Almost Fridays 15/04/21

On top of the voice of an angel, Chris Neto has the rapier wit of a musketeer / pirate, & he is one of the amazing musicians who are sharing their work with us this week https://fb.me/e/dtk7xZyHy at Almost Fridays s02e02! Come along from 6pm to see what happens when the worlds of indie music, visual arts, poetry, and electronic music collide with extreme prejudice. Come join the family.

Chris Neto chatted with Ryan this week, old friends becoming fast friends, covering topics from musical influences, plug-ins, finger drumming, to writing methods, & collaboration. As always, we take a walk down Lujan’s Alley, and find our insecurities have moved to Nantucket.

Keep an eye on Chris’ instagram to catch his imminently released project in collaboration with Gargantini & Lola Sola as mentioned on-pod.

The music you hear in the tops and tails is When You Found Me by Chris Neto available where all good music is streamed.

Artist Interview: The Boy Who Held His Breath - Almost Fridays 01/04/21

Artist Interview: The Boy Who Held His Breath - Almost Fridays 01/04/21

Season 2 of Almost Fridays kicks off on April Fools this this week https://fb.me/e/7hABZtoFQ! & we have something of a first! What is it, you ask??? One of our Live Remixers: Adrian Elmer, AKA The Boy Who Held His Breath (TBWHHB) https://theboywhoheldhisbreath.bandcamp.com/album/modes-of-limited-transposition, is launching his mini album in an entirely novel way, novel like LOTR trilogy. Here’s how: Within the context of Live Remixing ie. recording samples of our musical artists, and creating original beats & soundscapes, TBWHHB will be interleaving his freshly baked creations into a layer cake of pieces from his album! Is it a melange, or is a meringue? 🎂🥧🍋🍮🍧👨‍🍳 You must decide for yourself.

Adrian provides us with many fascinating topics including multi-modal, interdisciplinary collaboration, stereo artwork, & co-mixing a record between two people, one person mixes the left side, one person mixes the right side! WUT!? How about: What makes you a valid artist? Where is the line in the sand? How much output do you need to churn out to be eligible for your “I am officially a prolific artist” card!? As always, we take a walk down Lujan’s Alley.

That intriguing dual mono mix record https://open.spotify.com/album/1Owxl2WoYl9FiPM68Gy3DB?si=zHZwKovZTIm7dCDiBr9gwQ from Telafonica.

Artist Interview: Cone of Confusion - Almost Fridays 01/04/21

Season 2 of Almost Fridays kicks off this week https://fb.me/e/1VvlPwWW2! To celebrate: Ryan fails to pronounce French phonemes 🗣✋😑🇫🇷👎🙊 while chatting to Cone of Confusion’s Remi https://www.instagram.com/coneofconfusionband/, who are performing this week at Almost Fridays https://linktr.ee/almostfridays. As always, we take a walk down Lujan’s Alley, and talk about using limited frameworks to create an eco-system in which improvisational creative work can find it’s place in the food chain, and maybe build a little song-burrow or rhythm nest… Prepare to get french AF.

The music you hear in the tops and tails is Conscious Inertia https://open.spotify.com/track/7BrRcjfYycdYRTCCixw3ML?si=ijM8zyFJRQ6psd2BLoc5Vg by Cone of Confusion.

Come along to Almost Fridays, THIS WEEK https://fb.me/e/1VvlPwWW2

    Cone of Confusion https://www.instagram.com/coneofconfusionband/

Cone of Confusion's Producer: Jack Garzonio https://studios301.com/recording-mixing/jack-garzonio/

NB: This interview took place before our visual artist had to opt out of performing this week, so the info about Beau Roworth featuring this week (April 1st) is no longer correct. Our new visual artist will be announced very soon.

Artist Interview: Really Nice - Almost Fridays 11/02/21

Artist Interview: Really Nice - Almost Fridays 11/02/21

This week we change it up a bit, the inimitable Stevie Lujan turns the mic on Chels & Ryan from Really Nice to get some insight into their philosophies about their personalised values around creativity, and it's offspring. Who lives in your house of art? Who built it? Who appreciates it for all it's worth.

This chat took place before the first night of Almost Fridays, and it's quite historic, as we found ourselves in "Lujan's Alley" for the first. What's that? Listen to find out. Lujan's Alley led us to take an architectural / familial metaphor way further than any metaphor should ever be taken, and we loved every second of it.

Really Nice https://www.instagram.com/reallyniceband/ will be performing THIS WEEK https://www.facebook.com/events/911195659617461 alongside the formalised Casual Fan https://www.instagram.com/casualfanmusic/ & the Buckley-esque Jackson Carroll https://www.instagram.com/jacksoncarrollaus/

Artist Interview: Fringes - Almost Fridays 28/01/21

Artist Interview: Fringes - Almost Fridays 28/01/21

This week it is our pleasure to present a short, but sweet convo with Fringes, AKA Stevie Lujan (say it right).

Stevie is SO much more than an act who plays at Almost Fridays & our resident MC.

We roll deep with this chat, but we also have a good old chuckle. We got Nacho Libre references, spiritual discussion, what matters most to the artist presenting / performing their work while we take a walk down "Lujan's Alley". What's that? Listen to find out.

Fringes will be performing THIS WEEK alongside the part Elf Chris De Souza & the downright brilliant Timothy James Bowen.

    Reserve your ticket here.
