Lighting - With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility

Lighting - With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility

“What light through yonder window breaks...?” If it’s not the sun, then it’s likely artificial light. Considering the number of ways we can manipulate light - including colour, shape, intensity, reflection and more - are we using it to the greatest advantage to make our winter spaces more pleasing, safer, and better for our mental and physical health?
In this episode, we chat with Darío Gustavo Núñez from the Icelandic engineering firm Verkis and Sabine De Schutter from Studio De Schutter in Berlin. We explore the goals and opportunities of lighting, the many ways that we can control light or, alternatively, manage darkness, and the impacts and implications of lighting on our health and well-being.

Sorry Spring, Winter is the Season of Love

Sorry Spring, Winter is the Season of Love

Winter romance does not have to be limited to Valentine’s Day. The hush in the air, the mystery of the nights, and the need to cuddle up for warmth are just some of the reasons that winter can be the most romantic season of the year.

In this episode, we hear stories and poems about the romantic power of the season from Edmonton’s Poet Laureate Nisha Patel, Claudia Magalhaes-Steele, Reinekke Lengelle, Correne Refsahl-Jensen and Glenn Kubish. We also learn a bit about how winter romance makes good business from Stephanie MacDonald from Unforgettable Days and Laura Coulson - a promotions officer with Jasper National Park who also happens to be a marriage commissioner.

The discussion talks about measuring wind, and how we can plan our cities around both capitalizing on the benefits, while also mitigating the drawbacks.

Great initiative, please create more episodes!

Big fan - there’s surprisingly not much out there in the podcast world re: winter urbanism. New episodes going into the second wave of COVID would be great!
