    The Mind Beyond the Maze

    The Mind Beyond the Maze

An expert in the field of neurological mapping is the only person qualified to enter an experimental simulation and rescue her greatest rival.
    Genre: Science Fiction

    Excerpt:
“It could be psychological. Maybe his subconscious put something in there, or built a section of the maze on its own, and he’s having a tough time getting out.”

    “And what else?”

The tech frowned at me as if I already had the answer and was purposely keeping it from her so she could figure it out on her own. But I was just trying to gauge what their box was, and how far outside they had gone to figure out what was happening to their boss.

What’s the Writing Prompt that inspired the story?
(Doesn’t appear to be inspired by a prompt)
I probably asked myself a question to start off the brainstorm: What if a researcher and expert in the field of virtual neurological interfaces gets trapped in his own simulation, and the only person qualified to get him out is his bitterest rival?

    The Nanocosmetologist

    The Nanocosmetologist

An inventor aiming to revolutionize cosmetics with her intelligent nanoparticle mechanisms, revises and refines her invention to serve a greater purpose.

    Genre: Science Fiction

    Excerpt:
Kaira explained how it worked. Her nanoparticles were simple mechanisms that responded to commands transmitted from a voice-activated processing patch attached to her skin, just below her throat. She called them nanoparticle mechanisms or NPMS. They were simple, but not identical. The ones that coated her hair were designed to expand and contract, turn opaque, and reflect light of certain wavelengths. But the ones coating her face were designed to remain translucent, to cluster in different concentrations so as to conceal when needed, and to turn sheer when wanted.

The Cat That Haunted the Mouse

The Cat That Haunted the Mouse

A mouse narrowly escapes a cat, and is later haunted by the ghost of the cat, who believes the mouse plays a part in the “unfinished business” of the cat’s life.
    Genre: Fable

    Excerpt:
Two eyes, yellow with a green glow, hovered in the darkness. A shaft of soft light from a crack in the wall fell between Rini and those eyes, those eyes that loomed. Those eyes that floated closer.
A smiling snout appeared in the shaft of light, and wicked whispers, and sharp, pointed ears, and those eyes whose hungry gaze fell upon Rini.

What’s the Writing Prompt that inspired the story?
While search through writing prompts, I saw the term “spirit animal.” I didn’t want to use whatever the prompt was, but it did inspire me to think of my own prompt: What if a mouse was being haunted by the ghost of the cat who tried to kill her, but ended up dying instead?

    Draugamunninn

    Draugamunninn

A desperate people once made a monstrous bargain with a demon, and monsters they became.
    Genre: Fairy Tale

Alert: This episode contains mention of harm to human babies, comparable to what can be found in classic fairy tales such as “Hansel and Gretel.”

    Excerpt:
Legend says that the draugamunninn were once human. They were a practical but severe people who after suffering one terrible winter too many, and after failing to feed themselves with their own hands and their own labor, began to pray to their old gods for relief. But their prayer was not answered by a god.
It was answered by a demon.

What’s the Writing Prompt that inspired the story?
The title of the story is the slightly modified version of the word that resulted when I picked English to Icelandic in Google translate, and punched in the words “ghost mouth.”
Another resource I read almost all the way through, about Icelandic names.
