How The IPL Auction Market REALLY Works

How The IPL Auction Market REALLY Works

On this episode of Strike Rate: The Cricket Analytics Podcast we return to the IPL. Dan has been writing a series of articles on IPL market dynamics and what really has an impact on the IPL auction. Building on that we have an in depth conversation about the analytical side of the IPL auction and discuss what really drives a player's price. Then we go on to talk about what teams can do from a strategic point of view to build a better cricket team.
Why are team's paying so much for batters and not bowlers? Which age profile performs best in the IPL? Is it time for franchises to say goodbye to aging stars like David Warner, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli?

Responding To Simon Doull - New Rules To Reduce Runs - And A Mailbag!

Responding To Simon Doull - New Rules To Reduce Runs - And A Mailbag!

Three topics on this week's episode of Strike Rate: The Cricket Analytics Podcast. First up Dan Weston offers a response to Simon Doull, who this week claimed that all analysts who hadn't played the game were useless (paraphrasing slightly). Why is that wrong and why will that look even wronger in the near future?

Then we go through 8 ideas for rule changes to reduce run rates in T20 cricket. These include ideas around power plays, bowling limits, humidors, fielding restrictions and the impact sub. What would the impact on the game be?

Then in the second part we get to questions. These range from questions about the future of off-spin, through to how analytics works when we don't have perfect information.

How Coaching and Cricket Analytics Work Together? - With Paul Nixon

How Coaching and Cricket Analytics Work Together? - With Paul Nixon

On this episode of Strike Rate: The Cricket Analytics Podcast we invited Paul Nixon to join us. Paul Nixon had a 23 year career as a pro, played for England, played a World Cup, then has gone on to be a successful coach (winning the CPL) and spending a number of years working with Dan at Leicestershire.
In the podcast we talk to Paul about his time working as a coach, covering how he works with analytics and brings data into his coaching style. We discuss his time with Leicestershire and what role he filled as Head Coach, as well as how that differs to his time as the coach of the Jamaica Tallawahs.
In a great conversation we get into detail about where analysis was able to supplement his role as a coach, with particular successes including the breakthrough of Rishi Patel and the recruitment of Naveen Ul-Haq before he played in the IPL.
What role did his analyst (Dan Weston himself!) play at Leicestershire? What does he do when players are resistant to using data? What were some of his successes based on data?
