Tar Sands Diplomat

Tar Sands Diplomat is a satirical thriller set at the Canadian diplomatic mission in Brussels. After a Russian prostitute dramatically murders the Canadian mission's star diplomat with an Inuit statue, Macgregor is plunged into a world of spooks, Big Oil, Russian oligarchs and eco-hacktivists that leads him back to a well-connected Canadian oil company and the Prime Minister's Office in Ottawa. Author Keith Halliday was formerly the twelfth most senior diplomat at the Canadian Mission to the European Union in Brussels. After rocketing to the rank of Second Secretary, he retired from the Foreign Service. He started Tar Sands Diplomat while on a chemotherapy-induced vacation from his day job.
Perfect for the summer road trip.

This is a terrific way to ease your drive across the prairies. There are some truly cringe-worthy scenes (like when The Brazilian meets His Excellency), and there are some very clever twists (like the interview with Whiskey Magazine - I laughed out loud!) The only problem is that I was so engrossed in the plot and the shenanigans that I almost missed the turn for Calgary! A big "Thank You" to Keith for making my prairie road trip a piece of cake.
Not your typical whodunnit

Mystery and intrigue without the stereotypical cast of Hollywood-style players. The characters are entertainingly satirical yet delightfully real and the plot has been unfolding in a way that's kept me hooked right from the start. It's a whodunnit in the very best of ways. Definitely worth the listen.

This carefully crafted story draws extensively from the author's years in the Canadian diplomatic corps. While so much of that world is deadly boring, Halliday brings witty irony and sometimes gut splitting humour to this story. A must read for any aspiring diplomats - and even better narrated by the author.
A wee bit of rye Canadian humour!

As a former empoyee of the Department, I listened for the kernels of truth packed within the rye and witty narrative and could not help but chuckle while listening each episode. It is an important part of my Sunday routine. Thank you to all involved, especially Keith Halliday.
