Tatooine Sons is a weekly conversation between a dad and his two sons about the biggest pop culture films and TV franchises. We believe that pop culture is the mythology of this generation; that there is a story written on our souls and that these “myths” speak to that story. That’s why we talk about Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Lord of the Ring and more.

Reexamining The Sequel Trilogy: The Rise of Skywalker (Season 7 Episode 21)

Reexamining The Sequel Trilogy: The Rise of Skywalker (Season 7 Episode 21)

In this episode, we dive deep into the monumental challenge faced by The Rise of Skywalker when it hit theaters in December 2019. Tasked with concluding the 9-film Skywalker Saga and reuniting a divided fan base, the film was promised to be "satisfying." But did it deliver?

We'll kick off with a brief intro, followed by a discussion about Solo: A Star Wars Story, Colin Trevorrow’s Duel of the Fates, and the return of JJ Abrams alongside Chris Terio. We'll reminisce about the Episode IX panel at Star Wars Celebration Chicago and the iconic trailer reveal with Ian McDermid’s unforgettable "Roll it again" in Palpatine’s voice.

Expectations for The Rise of Skywalker were sky-high, but did it meet them? We’ll share our initial reactions, what we loved, what we didn’t, and debate whether it was a “satisfying” conclusion to the saga. Despite its struggles, we acknowledge the film's remarkable moments and true Star Wars essence.

We'll explore major themes in The Rise of Skywalker, such as community and collective action, overcoming family legacy, and the power of hope and faith, especially through Leia's unwavering hope in her son. As we anticipate the future of Star Wars films, including the upcoming Rey film continuing The Skywalker Saga, we reflect on the nearly five-year wait since the last movie.

Reconsidering The Sequel Trilogy: The Las Jedi (Season 7 Episode 18)

Reconsidering The Sequel Trilogy: The Las Jedi (Season 7 Episode 18)

In this episode of Tatooine Sons: A Pop Culture Podcast, we're diving deep into the most controversial film in the Star Wars saga: *The Last Jedi*. Join us as we revisit the movie that launched our podcast and explore why it holds the top spot in our ranking of Star Wars films.

We kick things off with a fun story about a Twitter exchange with Heavy Spoilers, where my ranking of *The Last Jedi* sparked some heated reactions. This film isn't just another Star Wars episode for us; it’s a pivotal part of our journey as fans and podcasters.

We’ll take you back to the period between *The Force Awakens* and *The Last Jedi*, discussing the theories and excitement that built up around the movie’s release. Who is Rey? Is Finn a Jedi? Why is Luke on Ahch-To? We revisit the big questions and the wild speculation, including the famous "Your Snoke Theory Sucks" phenomenon.

The death of Carrie Fisher profoundly impacted the Star Wars community, and we'll reflect on how Rian Johnson handled her passing in the film. We'll also reminisce about the 2017 Star Wars Celebration and the buzz generated by the first trailer for *The Last Jedi*.

As we recount our experiences leading up to the opening night, we’ll discuss the intense marketing campaign and the film’s initial reception. "This is NOT going to go the way you think" became a prophetic line that perfectly captured the movie’s divisive nature.

We’ll share our initial reactions to *The Last Jedi* and delve into why we love it so much, despite the controversy it stirred. Being known as superfans of this film has been a unique experience, and we’ll discuss why we believe it has sparked such strong opinions.

*The Last Jedi* tackled deep themes like failure, identity, and balance. We’ll analyze key moments and quotes from the film, exploring how these themes resonated with us and why they are crucial to the Star Wars narrative.

Finally, we’ll reflect on the evolving perception of *The Last Jedi* over the past seven years. While it remains a challenging film for many fans, there has been a gradual softening of opposition. Only time will tell if it will eventually be as beloved as other entries in the saga.

Tune in for an engaging discussion on *The Last Jedi*, and don’t forget to follow us on Substack for weekly recaps, in-depth explorations, and more. Join us this July as we reexamine the sequel trilogy, starting with *The Last Jedi*.

Why We Can't Keep Quiet About A Quiet Place: Day 1 (Season 7 Episode 16)

Why We Can't Keep Quiet About A Quiet Place: Day 1 (Season 7 Episode 16)

We're not typically horror movie enthusiasts, but there's one franchise that captivates us with its terrifying brilliance. What makes it stand out is the same reason we love Japanese-language, English-subtitled monster movies: the compelling story and characters. Stay tuned as we dive into it.

We'll share our overall thoughts on A Quiet Place: Day 1, including our Letterbox rating, favorite moments, and comparisons to the previous A Quiet Place movies.

Despite being a prequel with new characters, A Quiet Place: Day One outperformed its predecessors on opening weekend. Let’s explore why.

    Opening Weekend Box Office:
    A Quiet Place: $50M
A Quiet Place Part II: $47M
A Quiet Place: Day One: $52M [Inside Out 2: $57M (Highest grossing movie that weekend)\

Why has this franchise grown in popularity? What excited you about this prequel story for opening weekend? Would A Quiet Place Part III have performed as well?

Blockbusters require several factors to succeed, and the A Quiet Place series has consistently hit the mark, much like Godzilla Minus One.

The first 10 minutes of Day One lack any alien invasion. Did this approach work for you? Is Day One an alien invasion movie or a character-driven story set during an invasion? Why have franchises like Star Wars and Marvel struggled to consistently deliver strong stories and characters?

We've got SO MUCH more to share about the show and everything going on around it. Read it all HERE.
