"Financial Freedom" Is A Farce (I said what I said)

"Financial Freedom" Is A Farce (I said what I said)

Today on the podcast I am talking about how "financial freedom" is a farce and a terrible money goal to have for yourself.  While there may be variations on how one defines "financial freedom" for themselves- it's still quite common for most folks to have "zero debt" as a pre-requisite of "financial freedom."  Put another way, this means you can't be financially free if you are paying back debt. And this my friend, is the problem. In fact, it's not just one problem- there are TWO problems with this definition.  This is such a problematic concept that I'm dedicating a full episode to this topic.

Below are some key insights and learnings from today’s episode:

Why I coined the terms Mindset Masquerade and Debt Shaming Culture  How to leverage an understanding of the Mindset Masquerade and Debt Shaming Culture when it comes to seeking “financial freedom.” Why it’s incorrect and incongruent to equivocate working hard with wealth The danger of making your “financial freedom” contingent on a future goal or version of yourself The importance of financial literacy including how to use debt as leverage.
This is an important topic we are covering on today's episode.  Please listen, subscribe, and share the episode with folks who will benefit from this topic.

Your Power Is In The Present

Your Power Is In The Present

Today on the podcast we are talking about the power of progress.  We live in a society and culture that is very much results oriented.  I think there is such a hyper-focus on outcomes, results, and goals that we can miss a lot the goodness that comes along the way.

In this episode I also shared about a major podcast goal that took almost 2 years to complete.  If I’d only focused on the goal I would have missed out on countless wins, learnings, aha moments, and goodness along the way.  And life is too short to miss out on goodness!

I will be covering four mindset shifts you can take to reorient yourself to focus on progress instead of results and outcomes. I want you to pull out a pen and notebook for this episode, take notes and carve out some time for reflection.

Below are some key insights and learnings from today’s episode:
Your power is in the present. Recognizing this is how we can have some impact and influence over our future circumstances and results.   How to avoid falling into what I call the “Bang Fizzle Pitfall”- entering into a commitment with excitement for it only peter out and come to an end.   How to recognize when personal development and improvement becomes unhealthy What it means to be in a state of expansion and how this can we can get a wider perspective on all options you have available as you progress towards a desired outcome. Why it’s important to take into account the season of life you are within as that can impact how you go about progressing towards your goals.
This is an important topic we are covering on today's episode.  Please listen, subscribe, and share the episode with folks who will benefit from this topic.

The Power of Radical Self Advocacy

The Power of Radical Self Advocacy

Today on the podcast we are talking about the power of practicing radical self-advocacy.  I call this radical because for many folks who have marginalized and intersectional identities, the practice of standing up for yourself can be a radical act within a society and culture that does not recognize the humanity and rights of all individuals.  Practicing self-advocacy is a form of self-love and of self-care.

For women and folks impacted by misogyny and sexism, there is a risk in practicing self-advocacy because we are socialized as girls and women to be likeable, to be pleasant, to be nice, to put and to put other folks’ comfort ahead of our own.  This is a radical act when we are living within a society that has bias, prejudice, and discrimination built into the fabric of our culture.

So the reality is one must be strategic in how you go about being a self-advocate, you need to understand the power dynamics at play within any situation, but what we are not going to do is allow worry about our likeability and perceived lack of humility to keep us from standing up for ourselves and our interests.

Each time you stand up for yourself, make your interests known, communicate your non-negotiables, and are honest with yourself and others you are and living in alignment with your values. You practicing self-advocacy in your personal life is a power move.

Below are some key insights from today’s episode:
The power of self-advocacy and how it's a crucial element to your self-care routine.   Practicing self-advocacy won't guarantee a desired outcome but it will always be of benefit to you.   Why self-advocacy is a power move especially for folks who have experienced bias, discrimination, and prejudice from the past and in the present. Why it’s not always easy to be a self-advocate due to how girls and women have been socialized The powerful examples of how Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka- premier athletes and women of color who have unapologetically self-advocated for themselves by putting their mental and emotional health as a priority over profit. Learn three mindset shifts that can help you go from information about self-advocacy to implementation

F*ck The Money Stories, It's Time To Flip The Scripts

F*ck The Money Stories, It's Time To Flip The Scripts

In some areas we are brimming with self-trust, and in other areas...not so much. And that's okay. The process of cultivating self-trust is a life-long practice.  Because of this, it helps to be reminded that doubt is part of the human experience.
This can include doubt and uncertainty when it comes to making decisions about money. When it comes to making money decisions, our thoughts and beliefs about money are guiding our actions.  Money does not spend itself.  Money does not save itself. Money does not invest itself.  Money does not earn itself. We are the ones making the decisions.

But we are making money decisions within a belief system. Our belief system is something to help us to make sense of the world.  Our belief systems act as a filter through which we view the world and our place in it.    And countless beliefs are interwoven within our belief systems.

We have beliefs about ourselves.  Beliefs about our self-worth and our capabilities.  Beliefs about what we "should" do (or not do) with our money.  We have beliefs about our partners, spouses, and folks with whom we share financial responsibilities. Often times our beliefs about money are instilled in us early on, as children.

There are the beliefs we are told outright about money from our families, elders, friends, and communities. There are the beliefs placed upon us by society and the culture we live- in terms of who gets to have money and who does not.  Who is good with money and who is not? Who is worthy of investment and who is not?

Listen to today’s episode where we cover the following key topics:
The concept of belief and those beliefs we hold both at the conscious and subconscious levels. Because there is no talking about money without talking about beliefs and how it shows up in our day to day decisions which includes decisions around money.  Some of the common money stories and beliefs that can get in the way of your goals.   Learn an easy and simple method on how you can flip the script on some of the money beliefs that may be getting in your way.
This is an important topic we are covering on today's episode.

The phrase "flip the script" originates from the graffiti scene and culture, which rose from the Black and Latino neighborhoods of New York City alongside hip-hop music and street subcultures in the 1970s and 80s. Early graffiti artists were commonly called "writers" or "taggers" (individuals who write simple "tags," or their stylized signatures, with the goal of tagging as many locations as possible.) The goals was to have one's work seen by as many people as possible, in as many places as possible. So taking a rivals tag name and replicating it upside down or backwards was a way to showcase one's own superior skills. It was a way to show a rival's "script" or "tag" was so simple you could replicate it any way.  This is where "flip the script" originates and it’s important for us to recognize it – Click Here to read more.

Naomi *GETS* Power

I had to pause a few minutes in and get out my notebook, because Naomi was dropping some truth bombs.

First, she explains why she's skeptical of the widespread use of the word 'empowerment' in women's spaces. (I am too.) It literally means "to give power". Naomi points out that means, implicitly, that women do not inherently possess power; it must be transferred to them. She also points out that you almost NEVER hear the word empowerment applied to mean; again, the implication is that *men already possess power*. Seeking empowerment instead of power is an admission of lack, of defeat. (My words, not hers.)

Next, Naomi walks through the external, social levers of power --and she does that deliberately. She points out that when it comes to building power, women are usually encourage to turn inward, to their emotional landscape. That's valuable, but what we need to do is EXPRESS power in the world, to influence outcomes -- and that requires getting our hands on financial and political levers in the world and USING THEM to create those equitable outcomes. In other words: let's get out of our bubbles, our heads, and our homes and shake sh*t up. There's no point in being internally "empowered" if we're not USING that power.

"Use the external levers of power" -Naomi Scott Clark and YES PLEASE MORE PLEASE.

Finally: over and over again, Naomi reminds us that power is not a dirty word and there's only stigma attached to power-seeking women in order to keep us away from it. Women having power is awfully inconvenient to the powers that be...so let's inconvenience them. Because "power is impact".

In other words: let this podcast fuel your rise so you can create the impact you're dreaming of.
