WOT 160: Three Simple Casts, Timing Our Presentations, and the Nantahala River with Lewis Hirsch

WOT 160: Three Simple Casts, Timing Our Presentations, and the Nantahala River with Lewis Hirsch

In this episode we WadeOutThere with Lewis Hirsch, from Atlanta Georgia.  Lewis first picked up a fly rod at the age of fourteen, when nothing else seemed to fit him.  He quickly became involved in the US Youth Fly Fishing Team, and spent more time on the Nantahala River during his last two years in high school than he did in the classroom… Despite the fact that it was two and a half hours from home.

After high school, Lewis packed up his gear and headed west to spend the summer guiding in Montana on the Big Hole and Beaverhead Rivers, where I met him on a fishing trip with my son.  When he isn’t chasing trout in Montana, Lewis guides in Northern Georgia.

We discuss the Nantahala River, patterns and timing of feeding trout, and three basic casting techniques to solve some basic problems of drag.

WOT 159: Teaching, Learning, and the Richness of Trout Streams with Tom Rosenbauer

WOT 159: Teaching, Learning, and the Richness of Trout Streams with Tom Rosenbauer

In this episode we WadeOutThere with Tom Rosenbauer, from Manchester Vermont.  Tom has been fly fishing and tying for nearly all his life.  After college he got a job as a retail clerk at Orvis when it was still a small but growing business in Vermont.  Slowly, but surely, Tom’s emphasis on teaching and education helped develop him into a leader and educator at both Orvis and within the fly fishing community.

Tom is the author of over twenty fly fishing books, has created too many educational articles and videos to count, and is the host of the Orvis Fly Fishing Podcast, with over 12 million downloads.  His efforts have helped untold numbers of anglers on the water, myself included.  Besides the great personal gratitude I have for the resources Tom has put out into the world, perhaps what is most impressive to me is his persistent pursuit of learning and effortless humility.

We discuss what excites Tom about fly fishing these days, his thoughts on the creative process of writing, and exploring the richness of different trout streams.  Tom also shares his ideas on spot burning, catch and release, conservation, and overcrowding.

WOT 158: The Rogue River and Being "Green" with Jon Hazlett

In this episode we WadeOutThere with Jon Hazlett, from Medford Oregon.  Jon’s first guide job was up in Alaska after his best friend from college convinced him to join him.  After Alaska, Jon followed his friend to guide in Colorado.

But eventually, Jon moved back to live, fish, and guide in his home waters of Oregon where he still guides today.  Jon was an early adopter of spey casting on the Rogue River and is a passionate steelhead angler.

We discuss being green as a guide and in fly fishing, the Rogue River, tips for fighting steelhead, and the motivations for his fly fishing movie, entitled, “Not Another Fly Fishing Movie.”
