Thin Privilege, Fatphobia, Marginalized Bodies and Swapping Weight Loss for Health with Raffela Mancuso Elisa Unfiltered : Living Life Out Loud

    • Mental Health

This episode is for anyone struggling with self worth, fat shaming, diet culture beliefs, or with the deep knowledge that there is more to life than the way we look.
It is so important to my personal health and wellbeing to keep the discussions going about our beliefs, where we learned them and to use this platform to amplify melanated voices.
My guest today is Raffela Mancuso. No, she hasn’t written a book, no she is not famous, no she doesn’t have a million followers on Instagram. However, she has a powerful message that she has been speaking about for years. She came onto my radar via social media after one of her posts went viral. The premise of the post was that “Thin people are taking up the space in the body positivity/self love corner” and it called in some of the biggest influencers on Instagram to join the conversation. And guess what!? They did! Her post got over 4000 comments and skyrocketed her into “influencer status” overnight.
Raffela identifies as being “small” fat, which we will get into later in the show, and shares her journey of living in a bigger body, the fat shaming, fatphobic tendencies of others, mental health issues, and how she is constantly labelled as unhealthy because of the size of her body.
Today, we dive into all the stereotypes, stigmas, beliefs on swaping weight loss for health, offensive language around bigger bodies, thin privilege and so much more.
