    86. The Dynamics of Abuse: Decoding the Depp-Ception w. Nic & Kathrin

    Rundown

This is part 2 of our discussion about the Depp v Heard trial, the misogyny and disinformation surrounding it, and its social and political implications. We talk about the ways in which defamation as a weapon is already being wielded by abusers and white nationalists, some of the key issues with the trial and the unequal power dynamics between the parties, the dynamics of abuse and how these have been lost in the noise, and the ableism and queerphobia perpetuated throughout the proceedings. Please also check out Kathrin’s video on the topic, and stay tuned for Nic’s series which will dig into the evidence.

    85. The Imperialist Sex Trade w. Esperanza Fonseca & Khara Jabola-Carolus

    85. The Imperialist Sex Trade w. Esperanza Fonseca & Khara Jabola-Carolus

    Rundown

Mexie is joined by Esperanza Fonseca and Khara Jabola-Carolus of the transnational feminist and anti-imperialist organization, AF3IRM, to discuss the history and present of the global sex trade and the insufficiency of the liberal feminist discourses surrounding it. We’ll discuss the history of the industry, its relation to colonialism, imperialism and militarization (as well as patriarchy and capitalism), the class character and class contradictions involved in the trade, the politics of buying, the voices of the most marginalized often left out of mainstream discourses, and visions for a liberated future. We are of course fiercely in support of the workers, or people selling in the trade, and believe liberal feminist discourses do a disservice to all by falsely conflating a critique of the industry and exploiter classes with a critique of the workers.

    84. The Depp Defamation Trial: #MeToo Meets the Manosphere (and it’s Ugly) w. Nic & Kathrin

    Rundown

In this episode, Mexie speaks with Nic (host of the Pynk Spots podcast and YouTube channel) and Kathrin (host of the Kathrin YouTube channel) about the absolute trash fire that is the Johnny Depp defamation trial. We discuss the circus that’s been made of what should be a very somber trial, the rampant misogyny in the public discourse, the lionization of Johnny and demonization of Amber despite the mountain of quite damming evidence against Johnny, menpathy, #MeToo, and the implications of all of this for survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault. This is a very heavy topic and we’ve used it as an opportunity to really dig in on a number of incredibly important issues and the severity of this cultural moment.

    83. Ending Animal Testing w. Monica Engebretson (Cruelty Free International)

    83. Ending Animal Testing w. Monica Engebretson (Cruelty Free International)

    Rundown

In this episode, Mexie speaks with Monica Engebretson of Cruelty Free International about two pieces of legislation the organization is putting forward in the U.S. to reduce cruel and unnecessary animal testing. We discuss what life is like for animals subject to various tests and the multitude of alternatives that are far more effective, human-relevant, and humane. We also let listeners know how they can support the bills and similar legislation elsewhere.

Background info: Approximately 60,000 dogs, 18,000 cats and 140,000 rabbits are used in experiments in the US every year and many may be killed and discarded if they are considered no longer useful to the laboratory, even if they could be released for adoption into loving homes. The NIH currently spends at least $12 billion of taxpayers’ money on animal testing every year, but research shows that the return on investment is often low, and the results inaccurate. The NIH reports that approximately 90 percent of promising medications have failed in human clinical studies despite having passed pre-clinical studies, including animal tests.

    Rundown

In this episode, Mexie talks with Jessey Njau, a community-centred urban farmer in Toronto who founded Zawadi Farm. Jessey talks about his journey from his soul-sucking job in tech to his life-giving urban farm project, the importance of community-driven food systems founded on reciprocity and mutual aid, and the possibilities for transforming cityscapes into productive and generative spaces. Urban food security is wildly important, especially as the climate crisis advances. Jessey’s passion and commitment are contagious, and he leaves listeners with advice on how to get involved in local food systems.

    Rundown

In this episode, Mexie talks with Abby Martin and Mike Prysner of the Empire Files about their upcoming documentary film, Earth’s Greatest Enemy, which will document and expose the imperialist U.S. war machine as the world’s biggest polluter. We discuss the links between capitalism, imperialism and climate change and talk about what Abby and Mike have been uncovering while shooting the film. We cover their wild time at COP26, their time visiting receding glaciers in Alaska, and their activism around the Red Hill facility in Hawaii. We also touch on the importance of anti-war and truly anti-imperialist activism right now with advice for organizers.

Great podcast

Can’t recommend Vegan Vanguard enough!

Fantastic Content & Sharp Analysis

This podcast is phenomenal. The content is always interesting, informative, and the anti-capitalist/anti-oppressive analysis is just - *chefs kiss* - perfect! This podcast is a staple in my podcast rotation, and should be a staple in yours too! 🌟

KateMoonStar ,

Full of divisive garbage

I do not appreciate a podcast that interviews a couple of whining slanderous people, that that spend their interview time bashing and spreading disinformation of a local organization that they helped build.

Why would The Vegan Vanguard entertain and encourage this behaviour from their guests? The entire interview was whining!

The information is also very poor. These are just kids who see the world through their black coloured glasses spreading mis- and disinformation about politics, vegans, people, and life in general.
