Choral Evensong from Trinity Cathedral Episcopal Church in Cleveland, Ohio Trinity Cathedral Episcopal Church
-
- Religion & Spirituality
Evensong offers a space of beauty and rest in the middle of each week. First held in the Church of England in 1549, Choral Evensong has for centuries been an evening offering sung in cathedrals and churches of the Anglican Communion.
Trinity Cathedral offers weekly evensong services as the sun goes down, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday evenings from October through mid-May. The service is led on alternating weeks by the Cathedral Choir and The Trinity Chamber Singers, and by the clergy of Trinity Cathedral, and we welcome guest presiders throughout the season

These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the first-fruits unto God and to the Lamb. And in their mouth was found no guile, for they are without fault before the throne of God. -

Hymn 192 10 April: The Day Draws on with Golden Light - Edward BairstowThe day draws on with golden light, glad songs go echoing through the height, the broad earth lifts an answering cheer, the deep makes moan with wailing fear. For lo, He comes, the mighty King, to take from death his power and sting, to trample down his gloomy reign, and break the weary prisoner's chain. Maker of all, to thee we pray, fulfil in us thy joy today. When death assails, grant, Lord, that we may share thy Paschal victory. Amen. -

There's a Wideness in God's Mercy - Maurice Bevan
There's a wideness in God's mercy like the wideness of the sea; there's a kindness in his justice which is more than liberty. There is no place where earth's sorrows are more felt than up in heaven; there is no place where earth's failings have such kindly judgment given. For the love of God is broader than the measure of man's mind; and the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind. But we make his love too narrow by false limits of our own; and we magnify his strictness with a zeal he will not own. There is plentiful redemption in the blood that has been shed; there is joy for all the members in the sorrow of the Head. There is grace enough for thousands of new worlds as great as this; there is room for fresh creations in that upper home of bliss. If our love were but more simple we should take him at his word; and our lives would be all gladness in the joy of Christ our Lord. -

March 13: O Lord, the Maker of all things - William Mundy
O Lord, the maker of all things, we pray thee now in this evening us to defend through thy mercy from all deceits of our enemies. Let neither us deluded be, good Lord, with dream or fantasy, our hearts waking in thee thou keep, that we in sin fall not on sleep. O father, through thy blessed Son grant us this our petition, to whom with the Holy Ghost always in heaven and earth be laud and praise. Amen. -

Nolo mortem peccatoris - Thomas MorleyNolo mortem peccatoris; haec sunt verba Salvatoris [I do not wish the death of a sinner; these are the words of the Savior]. Father, I am thine only Son, sent down from heav'n mankind to save. Father, all things fulfill'd and done according to thy will, I have. Father, my will now all is this: Nolo mortem peccatoris. Father, behold my painful smart, taken for man on ev'ry side; ev'n from my birth to death most tart, no kind of pain I have denied, but suffer'd all, and all for this: Nolo mortem peccatoris.
