Stereotypes have been a problem through history and it is only now that people are doing something to combat them. Educating yourself, being motivated, and addressing negative biases are three key ways to overcome stereotypes.

My experience growing up with two different cultural backgrounds has given me insight into the stereotypes many people face each day. Whether it is a racial slur, a cliche characteristic of the race, or preconceived ideas about appearance, I find myself constantly aware of the negative effects of stereotypes.

Disney princesses play a big role in challenging gender stereotypes. The movies, Mulan, Moana, and Tangled teach many young children that being a girl means being proud of yourself and not letting anyone tell you what to do.

Using high school stereotypes can be harmful to the students who are still developing in all types of ways. These stereotypes can lead to conforming to unrealistic biases, identity loss, and loneliness.

The media’s influence on women causes them to try and live up to an impractical stereotype. When women try to be something they aren’t it can cause eating disorders and body dissatisfaction, which is why it’s important to have good role models in their life.
