S2E03 - Future of Work Reality Check: Fact vs. Clickbait with Brian Elliott, Author & Co-Founder, Future Forum

FACT or CLICKBAIT ⁉️ Play along with Brian and I and find answers to every question on The Future of Work you’ve ever had and didn’t know whom to ask‼️😁

I dug up news headlines and CEO quotes (read: rant) and tossed them over to Brian for his insights. If you know Brian, you know that he tackles these with data, evidence, grace and a hearty dose of humor ‼️

    Here are a few:

😱 “The work from anywhere era is over”

    😱 “Remote work kills productivity”

😱 “They have no attachment, no passion, no creativity” a Fortune 500 CEO said.

😱 “As a CEO, I worry about the erosion of office culture with remote work”

😱 A KPMG study found that ~90% CEOs are likely to reward employees who make an effort to come into the office with favorable assignments, raises or promotions... Wait, isn’t that discrimination? 😱

We have way too much fun with these and get a little (or a lot) carried away‼️

S2E01: Not the science type with Jayshree Seth, Chief Science Advocate, 3M

40% said that their lives would be no different… WITHOUT SCIENCE‼️🤯 (Survey by 3M)

It is easy to dismiss skeptics. It is immeasurably harder to have empathy for them, their fears and concerns. It is even harder to make the invisibility of science visible and tangible for people, and HUMANIZE science so that people can relate to it, and see how science enables every minute of their day.

If science was out in the world looking for an advocate, for someone to tell her side of the story, I have no doubt it would be Jayshree‼️

In this episode we dive into a mega dose of inspiration with Jayshree Seth, Corporate Scientist and Chief Science Advocate at 3M. She holds 79 patents, is an author, tedx speaker, poet, music producer, and is on a mission to humanize science.

    About Jayshree Seth:

Jayshree was appointed 3M’s first ever Chief Science Advocate in 2018 and is using her scientific knowledge, technical expertise and professional experience to advance science, and to communicate the benefits of science and the importance of diversity in STEM fields. She is also a member of Carlton Society which is the 3M Science and Innovation “Hall of Fame.” In 2020, she was awarded Society of Women Engineers (SWE) highest Achievement Award. She is also the first-ever winner of a Gold Stevie® Award in the new Female Thought Leaders of the Year – category in 2021. Jayshree was featured in a docuseries titled Not the Science Type that premiered during the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival. S1E10: Build your network authentically with Pat Hedley, Former Managing Director, General Atlantic

S1E10: Build your network authentically with Pat Hedley, Former Managing Director, General Atlantic

Networking is superficial, transactional, and all about self promotion (ugh), I thought. I couldn’t have been more wrong‼️🤯

Pat loves networking. I hate it.

It made for an exciting podcast full of busting myths,  stories and tips to network with authenticity. Here are just a few.

    🚫 MYTHS ABOUT NETWORKING‼️

🚫 Myth : Networking is superficial, and transactional

✅ Reality : Nope! The goal of networking is to learn someone’s “2nd story”, and build lifelong relationships.

🚫 Myth : Networking is about self promotion

✅ Reality : Nope! Networking is about curiosity, humility and a desire to learn. It works much better than trying to impress someone, especially senior execs.

🚫 Myth : Senior people don’t want to be bothered. Why would they spend time with me? What do I have to offer?

✅ Reality : Senior people want to give back, and want to share their wisdom, but have to be approached in the right way. Your life experiences and your current vantage point is unique and hence, enough.

🚫 Myth : Networking is for extroverts

✅ Reality : Nope. Pat describes herself as naturally reserved, intentionally curious. Her curiosity fuels her drive to network.

🚫 Myth : Networking is about the number of people you know

✅ Reality : Networking is about the depth of those relationships. A small number of deeper relationships is better than a large number of superficial ones.

Pat Hedley is an Independent Board director, TedX Speaker, Author of ‘Meet 100 People’ and former Managing Director at General Atlantic. She is on a mission to help people overcome their reluctance and tap into the power of networks to learn and grow.
