Shaelyn Johnston is an award-winning, Anishinaabe and Irish-Canadian writer from Vancouver, BC. In this conversation, she shares some of her journey and wisdom with me in what I think is one of the most honest and vulnerable recordings I've had the pleasure of hosting. We talk about the path in life that's risen to meet her, some amazing, unimaginable experiences, and also some painful ones that have shaped her into who she is today.

Today, I am chatting with William, someone I've known for a long time now and always enjoy exchanging ideas and experiences with. This specific conversation was sparked by an Instagram post that William where he reflected on the privilege of being able to wash rice before cooking it. In exploring the topic, William and I talk through some growing moments that have shaped us into the people we are becoming.

This is a topic that I am really starting to delve into in therapy and conversations with close friends, so there will be more in this 'series' as the year continues! In this first one, I chat with my friend and colleague Manj (@manjpanj). Something that has always struck me about Manj is how similar our lives and experiences have been even though we aren't super close in age and were raised in different parts of the world. How much does culture come into play in our experiences and how much of it has to do with us being birds of a feather?

My friend Kanna is remarkable. She's been through a lot in life and she wanted to share one of the formative experiences she's experienced in a safe space, and I'm honored that she chose me and this podcast to share this story with.

Chef Debb Michail is an Iranian-American chef living who lives in Santa Monica.
