If you are unable to attend the graduation ceremonies in person, you are invited to watch them online! The ceremonies for our four comprehensive high schools will be live streamed on our YouTube channel - accessible from the Graduation page of our website. Recordings of all graduation ceremonies, including those for Hillsboro Online Academy and Oak Street Campus, will be posted to the Graduation page of our website the week of June 10th.

Congratulations to all of our 2024 graduates! We are extremely proud of you and wish you all the success and happiness in the world!

Our Featured Staff are HSD Retirees! On Thursday, May 23rd, HSD recognized and thanked its retiring staff members at a District Retirement Celebration, held in the South Meadows Middle School Library. This year’s fifty-five retirees represent 991 years of collective service to the Hillsboro School District and we could not be more grateful for the dedication they’ve shown and guidance they’ve provided to students throughout their careers. Superintendent Reiman’s comments to the retirees concluded this way: “As you move into your retirement, I hope you get to laugh every day, to enjoy your family as never before, and that you never again have to worry about another lesson plan, recess duty, or staff meeting. Thank you for the difference you have made!”

Hillsboro School District Weekly Hot News, May 27, 2024 - HSD Aerospace Career Day

Hillsboro School District Weekly Hot News, May 27, 2024 - HSD Aerospace Career Day

On Friday, May 17th, more than 1500 HSD students - including third-graders from sixteen elementary schools and eighth-graders from Poynter and Evergreen Middle Schools - participated in an Aerospace Career Day during the Oregon Air Show at the Hillsboro Airport. The event was co-created by HSD’s Elementary Career and College Pathways and the Oregon Air Show Charitable Foundation as a way to engage students in hands-on aviation, science, and engineering activities led by pilots, aviation mechanics, and jet engine engineers.

High school students in HSD’s Oregon Aerospace Careers for Everyone - or O-ACE - program, along with their teacher, Sheri Brownlie, supported participants as they dove into activities like creating Harrier paper airplanes and learning about the fundamentals of flight - including how the airfoil design keeps a plane in the air.

Students also had the opportunity to meet and speak with Air Force maintainers about the components of a jet engine; see and feel aviation mechanic tools, thanks to the PCC aviation program; and explore a Q-400 plane on tours hosted by Alaska/Horizon Air.

Many thanks to the Oregon Air Show Charitable Foundation and to Captain Chris Barber for sponsoring and facilitating the event, in hopes that students will shoot for the stars to achieve their dreams. If you would like to connect with this vision in the future, please reach out to Elementary Career and College Pathways Teacher on Special Assignment, Raquel LemusGarcia.

Our featured students are our 2024 valedictorians and salutatorians! On Tuesday, May 21st, we celebrated our eighty-three top achievers at a luncheon held at Hidden Creek Community Center. Superintendent Travis Reiman, Mayor Steve Callaway, Hillsboro Schools Foundation Executive Director Aron Carleson, Washington County Chamber of Commerce School-to-Career Director Karen Donaldson, and Board Chair Mark Watson congratulated the students on their accomplishments and encouraged them to both go off to college and have new adventures, and to consider returning here afterward to plant their roots. As is tradition, the event concluded with students sharing one piece of advice for incoming freshmen. Visit our website to read what they had to say and to see pictures from the event.

Hillsboro School District WEEKLY HOT NEWS, MAY 20, 2024 - MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

Hillsboro School District WEEKLY HOT NEWS, MAY 20, 2024 - MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, dedicated to prioritizing and promoting open conversations about our social and emotional wellbeing. Mental health encompasses how we manage stress, connect with others, and make healthy choices. Taking care of our mental health is just as important as taking care of our physical health. We can support our mental health by focusing on self-care, establishing a routine, maintaining healthy social connections, developing positive coping strategies, and having open conversations about mental health needs.

In HSD, we encourage students, staff, and families to:

Learn more about mental health and protective factors,

Speak respectfully and inclusively about mental health,

Seek help if they are struggling with their mental health and encourage others to do the same, and

Create safe and supportive environments for open conversations about mental health.

If you need help connecting to resources in our community, you can talk with a school counselor or explore the resources on our website.

Together, let's prioritize mental health awareness and create a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to prioritize their wellbeing.

Our featured student is Liberty High School senior Jared Lim. Jared represented HSD and Team Oregon at the International Science and Engineering Fair - or ISEF - in Los Angeles the week of May 12th through 17th. His project, Connexelerator, took first place in the Computer Science and Robotics category at Intel’s Beaverton-Hillsboro Science Expo in March, which both qualified him for the Northwest Science Expo on April 5th, and earned him a trip to ISEF. Connexelerator is an Artificial Intelligence-powered language learning application that Jared felt compelled to develop after his own experiences with learning multiple languages, including Malay, English, Chinese, Spanish, and Japanese. It made its debut during the 2023 Congressional App Challenge; and while it didn’t win, it allowed Jared to meet Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, spurred him to make improvements to his user interface, and has led him to his recent science fair successes. It also gained him a referral to another international program, “RISE for the World,” where he will compete among 500 finalists at this year’s event in June. Learn more about Jared and his Connexelerator app on our website.

There will be no school for all students on Monday, May 27th, in observance of Memorial Day. School resumes for all students on Tuesday, May 28th.
