Hello and welcome to the Friday ReFresh, a Ben and Travis podcast. I’m Ben from Ben and Travis and I have been working as a minister for 23 years and as a counselor for the last 10 years. I recognize that there are a lot of things in our world that impact different people in different ways. Working in counseling I’ve learned that there are a lot more things that can rock our world that I never knew existed. Many of those things are hidden struggles that others may never know about — or at least they don’t know about until something comes along and quite literally “opens up a can” of past trauma or hidden struggles.
So I invite you to come along with me on this journey of exploration and understanding through this podcast which offers short episodes and hopefully informational and motivational material to help you as you prepare for the last day of the week. Not every episode will be about a mental health struggle but there will certainly be weeks that are. Sometimes we will just hope to give you a boost as you close out the week. However, there are some rules of engagement here though - some understanding that I want you to have before you agree to go on the journey.

1. Keep An Open Mind - Some of the things we talk about here may be new territory. It may be like one of those movies like Journey to the Center of the Earth where you see things that seem hard to comprehend. I know there were a lot of things that were hard for me to grasp at first and has certainly been hard to relate to others. So think of it like Journey to the Center of Your Soul.
2. It’s an Ever-Changing Landscape - The counseling field is something that seems to change all the time so understand that I may say some things that may be different than what you might have been taught in the past. It may also change as I record these over time. It is also true that various theories of counseling reveal different techniques for dealing with things so I will likely be sharing things from a wide variety of therapeutic mindsets.
3. No Two Experiences are the Same - Just because we share a thought about anxiety or depression doesn’t mean it will apply to every person who hears and so this is certainly not a replacement for good person centered counseling - but you may very well find some helpful tips for various things you may face.
So, do you think you are good to start that journey? I hope so. Travis and I hope through this short podcast, along with the weekly Helping, Healing, Humor Podcast and our website to bring a better understanding of mental health to all people but especially to the church. It is a part of us that has been ignored for far too long. I hope that even in this short little podcast to help us have a little more understanding.

I often talk about my very eclectic taste in music. You might find me listening to country one moment, then 70s rock, then an acapella gospel song.

Or it could be blue grass, then rap, followed by a couple of musical numbers from Disney or broadway.

But in my phone I also have a playlist entitled “Memorial.”

It’s a playlist I made one year so that when I got up and started doing things on Memorial Day I could just hit play and start the day off thinking about the sacrifices of those who have paved the way for me to live in this land of the free.

In every walk in nature one receives far more than he seeks. John Muir.

This past Saturday I got to enjoy a Nothing Day. We didn’t have any formal plans so we slept in a little later than usual and then we went to our friends house to ride jeeps and four-wheelers and then walk the creek.

We saw some local wildlife, looked for fossils, creek glass, smooth rocks for skipping, and interesting rocks for keeping.

We chatted and mused over the way God’s creativity or forces of God’s nature had carved out this little creek among the towering bluffs surrounding it.

The kids challenged their bravery by jumping off large boulders into the creek below.

The day ended with burgers, dogs, and some time around the fire pit.

Nothing days have become a favorite. We live a pretty fast-paced existence with appointments and kid activities so while they are few and far between there is certainly a desire to make them more of the norm.

No one is immune to struggles.
No one is prevented from pain.
No one will avoid every heartache.
In that way we are all the same.

No one can claim all the answers.
No one succeeds on their own
No one can conquer every giant
We weren’t meant to face life alone.

No one has room to judge.
No one lives life without flaw.
If they saw the whole picture of your life
    they’d probably stand in awe.

So hang in there and keep your head up.
Your story will be a success.
Don’t give up, make the most of your day
And that, is your Friday Refresh.

One of my favorite things to do as I drive is to listen to podcasts. But not any old podcast. I like true stories. I like stories of people who face hard things head on and find a way through it. This started with one that my cohost of the Helping Healing Humor podcast put me on to. It was called “A Short History Of” and it chronicles all sorts of interesting historical events, people, battles, or places. Usually those things included elements of difficult times for someone or a bunch of someone’s.

    He started with eight.

Not eight grown men. Eight boys.

From a tiny blooming seed consisting of eight boys, he managed to grow the dream into something that well over 20,000 participate in each year now.

The other day I was driving my kids to school and my 7 year old son began talking about how he dreads moving to the next grade in school. His lament went something like this: “what if I CAN’T do the work!”

My immediate…almost visceral response was “don’t say the word can’t—can’t is poison.”

I’m not exactly sure where that came from because I’ve never said that before or even heard that sentence. However, I’m learning more and more the sad power of the word can’t.
