    Episode 20 ft. Ariel Cao

Fresh off being awarded the 'Sparkling New Star' at the Miss Chinese Vancouver (MCV) 2020 pageant back in December, Ariel Cao (@ArielJCao) joins me (@GaberInc) to discuss her odyssey in preparing and participating in one of the most prestigious beauty pageants in the World; MCV has served as a springboard for some of the most respected entertainers in Hong Kong including Linda Chung (2003) and Gloria Tang (2012). ⁣

⁣In addition to the pageant, Ariel is a fifth-year student at the University of British Columbia (UBC), where she is majoring in Visual Arts and minoring in Computer Science. At the school, she is also the President of the Sororities, Residence Advisor and a Teaching Assistant. ⁣

⁣Ariel and I chat about the importance of developing thick-skin as a public figure in this day and age, her thoughts on retaining a healthy perspective surrounding her own body image and how she remains open to learning through her competitors despite the final result of each pageant she has competed in. ⁣

    Episode 19 ft. Philip Scrubb

    Episode 19 ft. Philip Scrubb

On the first episode of 2021, Gabe (@GaberInc) is joined by one of his best friends, Philip Scrubb (@PScrubb), to wrap up the two-part mini-series where conversations that are typically had during the Holiday season are brought to my listeners and viewers in hopes of bringing a sense of connection and community to those who may need it most during this typically joyous period.

Philip is an active member of the Senior Canadian Men's National Basketball Team. During his Collegiate Basketball at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada career, Phil charted territory that only a few others have: winning the national championship in all five years of his eligibility (and also being awarded the Most Outstanding Player of the Year award in three of those seasons). He currently playing professionally Limoges CSP in France, this is his sixth season of playing basketball overseas.

Amongst other things, I wanted to get Phil's take on the year that had just passed (2020) - one that was heavily defined by loss: the loss of basketball icon, Kobe Bryant and two months later, the loss of 'normalcy' - as when we were both in our first year of university, he lost his Mum, Diane Murphy, to a battle with Cancer.

We also discussed how the culture at Carleton University's basketball program shaped him ideologically as an student-athlete, coping with the Mental Health effects of living away from family and friends during the season and also how to focus more on performance rather than perception in the age of Social Media.
