#189 Racing Against the Odds: The Science of Running with Cancer (feat. Scott Capozza, Oncology-Certified PT)
On this episode, Andrea is joined by oncologic physical therapist, Scott Capozza for a practical and scientific approach to running while fighting and surviving cancer. Scott shares his own journey with testicular cancer. He and Andrea discuss the role of physical therapy for oncology patients, recommendations for maintaining running during cancer treatment, and practical advice for returning to fitness after treatment is over. Whether you or a loved one is battling cancer, or you're healthcare professional caring for cancer patients, this is a must-listen!
Scott Capozza, PT, MS has worked as a physical therapist in a multi-disciplinary survivorship clinic as well as an outpatient physical therapist dedicated to oncology rehabilitation. He received a Master of Physical Therapy degree from Ithaca College in 1999. Scott initially worked in pediatric physical therapy, including outpatient pediatrics, school-based physical therapy, and aquatic-based physical therapy, before making the transition to adult oncology rehabilitation. Scott is among the first class of board-certified clinical specialists in oncologic physical therapy in the United States and serves as a SACE II Item Writer for the oncology certification exam through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists. He holds several leadership positions within the American Physical Therapy Association, including the APTA Media Corps and the Academy of Oncologic Physical Therapy.

Our very own Matt Klein is approaching the finish line on his dissertation research on masters runners. On this episode he and Nathan break down his findings! Matt's research takes a look at biomechanical changes in masters runners and the prevalence of Achilles and calf injuries. Matt explains the methodology of his two studies and what conclusions can be drawn from them. They also explore how the average runner can maximize their longevity and performance as they age.

#184 Kara Goucher on Living with Dystonia, the Nike Oregon Project and Protecting Female Athletes
On this episode, Matt & Andrea have the privilege of interviewing Olympian Kara Goucher. Kara's just released her book, the Longest Race, Inside the Secret World of Abuse, Doping, and Deception on Nike's Elite Running Team. They cover many facets of Kara's story, from her current struggles with runner's dystonia to her integral part in exposing the Nike Oregon Project and Alberto Salazar. They also discuss how excel at any fitness level, finding joy in running by feel, and encouraging female runners of all ages.
Kara Goucher is a three-time NCAA champion, two-time Olympian, winner of the silver medal at the 2007 World Championships in the 10,000 meters, and a podium finisher at the Boston and New York Marathons. She is a running analyst for NBC Sports. She cohosts the hit running commentary podcast Nobody Asked Us with Des & Kara, as well as the Clean Sport Collective podcast, promoting fair play in sports. She lives in Boulder, Colorado, with her Olympic-runner husband, Adam, and their son, Colt. Her website is KaraGoucher.com.
