    Stewardship

    Stewardship

The leader, manager coach podcast is all about helping you to lead, to manage and to coach to the maximum potential you have, whether that is in your personal life, in business or whatever else.

The content in this episode was a result of the many discussions and thoughts Rob had about what is happening at the moment in elite football, particularly around the European Super League. Rob believes it has been spoken about enough already but there are lessons to be learnt from this situation.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Stewardship is so appropriate to this situation, there are so many things we can learn and analyse from this word in life and in the world.

Because of the enormous outcry from supporters, influencers and players about creating the European super league, because it was a mass disagreement, it made it virtually possible for it to go ahead, it was evident it was a bad decision. There were many clear consequences that would be negative, the only reasoning many could see was financial gain for the organisers.

One of the things that was argued in the discussion, was that football clubs are businesses and they must be run as so, or there wouldn’t be any football. But, we are not just dealing with a business that creates a product that people are not emotionally tied to. To think of them just as businesses is very limited thinking.

Each Football club has its own story, wisdom and history that is embedded in the club and the heart of its supporters.

In many cases, the people at the top with the power to make the decision to go into the super league are not engaged sufficiently with what it is they have in their control. If they were, if they were in a relationship with what it really and truly is, then the decision would not have been made.

Owning a football club is probably one of the greatest examples of stewardship, the issue is how good at stewardship are they?

    BEST MOMENTS

“As I was thinking about all this, the word that came to mind…is stewardship”

“It was a shock to millions of people and there was an outcry”

“These are powerful, beautifully created, generational entities”

“It’s a sad fact that the owners, the people in power…are sadly out of touch with what it is they are controlling”

    The Wisdom of Seneca

    The Wisdom of Seneca

Rob looks at the work of Tom Morris, author of ‘The Stoic Art of Living – Inner Resilience, Outer  Results focusing in this episode on Seneca.

It can be easy to view the past as not moving at the same pace as we do now but the cut and thrust of life in the past was as intense then as it is now and the learning just as relevant.

The older we get the more we realise time is precious and that you need to make the most of every second. Whatever sport or leadership capacity you are in becoming a stronger and more resilient person will help you to achieve balance in your life and the focus to reach the right goals and Rob shares great content on how to work towards this through the work of the stoic lawyer Seneca.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS
Being organised stops wastage and adds success. If you are chaotic you will waste time hitting the wrong goals
It’s not what you know it’s what you do, it’s about the actions you take
The challenge is setting the correct goals and understanding that setting the wrong goals is a painful lesson
Take control of your own life and know what makes you happy
Get clarity on who you are and what’s really important to you
If you know you are on the right path you will have an inner confidence
Inner confidence often comes from disaster and with  the learning that comes from difficult situations and adversity
Have a balance in life and follow your heart
The only time we have is now so you need to be aware of this and do what’s appropriate now

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Value your life and value your time’

‘Life is about actions, creating and doing’

‘You need to know yourself to be truly happy’

    A Delay or an Opportunity?

    A Delay or an Opportunity?

This is an episode that Rob recorded in 2020 when we were still in lockdown in the UK. Rob wanted to talk about delays and opportunities and how they resonate and link to similar struggles we are all facing in this pandemic.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS
Like many players, Bill Shankly had a hiatus of a few years when his career, like many others, was cut short due to world war 2. It was taken out of their hands. There is resonance and analogy between this and the current pandemic.
No matter what obstacles and delays the pandemic has caused you try and remind yourself this has happened before. It doesn’t make the pain easier but it may give you some reassurance and hope for the future.
We have to learn to live and deal with this pandemic, the universe will do what it wants to do.
With great ‘prizes’ also comes responsibility. Society easily sees the prize but often not the responsibility that comes with reaching a position of power.
If we have predetermined who we will be and how we will get there then there are no choices for us to make in life.
The magic is in the journey and not the destination because the lesson we need is right here, right now.

    BEST MOMENTS

“At this current moment in time your life will have been affected by this pandemic…although the circumstances and causes are different this has happened before”

“Adversity is a challenge but adversity is also an opportunity”

“Real friendships do not demand all the time”

Eknath Easwaran's Words To Live By (Part 4 of 12)

Eknath Easwaran's Words To Live By (Part 4 of 12)

Today in Rob’s fourth instalment of Eknath Easwaran's words to live by, he continues to discuss how we can apply Eknath’s learnings to our own paths of discovery, particularly regarding leading, managing and coaching.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS
This series of episodes is inspired by Eknath Easwaran who is an incredible thought leader and provides wonderful ways of looking at the world.
Teams are made of individuals. Remember that every single person is an individual and everyone must find their own way and make their own path. This makes it even more incredible when teams truly work.
Always consider that you know nothing. The minute you think you know something you essentially wall off further learning. Be the eternal student and always believe there is always something else to learn.
Never underestimate the power of small things.
Understand the power of routines and rituals.
What do you need to do to build up the level of connection with those you work with?
In today’s society, we are used to things happening quickly and can easily get frustrated. It’s important to remember that many things just take time.
If something can go wrong it will. Life is challenging and difficult. It’s better to be practically positive, where you can be realistic and set the right goals, understanding where you need to be and still be positive at the same time.
How may I serve? The greatest leaders are the greatest servers.
Be open to your intuition. We all have those thoughts that seemingly come from nowhere, those gut feelings. The more you allow yourself to tune into that and put trust in it the better and easier your decision making will be.

    BEST MOMENTS

“People are rarely at the same place at the same time…that unity is not easy to achieve”

“It’s a very dangerous game to believe you have arrived”

“There’s no such thing as a small thing”

“There’s a difference between being negative and being realistic”

Playing And Beyond - An Interview With Ciaran Toner

Playing And Beyond - An Interview With Ciaran Toner

In this episode Rob interviews ex-pro footballer Ciaran Toner. Ciaran has a wealth experience in the game of football, including being on the other side of training which is why he began coaching after retiring as a footballer. He has now also developed and created a player and coach platform to connect those in football in unique ways and provide countless opportunities for them.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS
Ciaran was born in Northern Ireland but moved to England as a teen and was signed to Tottenham Hotspur football club where he stayed for five years. He then went onto have a successful career in league two football until he decided to retire.
Ciaran was fortunate to have good experiences in the game and has used these experiences to guide and build his coaching practice.
In this day and age, there are support networks everywhere. It doesn’t have to be your Mum or your Dad, it can be your coach or an online community. It’s key to remember that.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of young players that aren’t willing to work as hard as the game requires. This is why one of the aspects Ciaran taught his coachees was a bit of ‘tough love’. He made it so they were prepared for the often brutal and ruthless industry of football.
Sometimes we fall into the trap or picking and choosing how we see the world to fit in with our own ideals and needs. But the reality is that the world we live in can be harsh, difficult and cruel. We need to be prepared ourselves for that as well as preparing those we coach and lead.
It is extremely difficult to become an elite football player. Sometimes no matter how much passion or skill a person has they can still end up falling short and a lot of them do.
Ciaran and his business partner John have created a player platform where players get opportunities to be scouted, have access to both learning and support resources as well as performance content and job/career boards. They have also developed a coach platform alongside this as a resource for coaches.

    BEST MOMENTS

“You can’t take anything for granted”

“I’ve lived and breathed it, it’s a ruthless industry”

“Sometimes the easy way out is not the best way”

“It’s great to have diversity, it’s really important”

    Come on Lewis!

    Come on Lewis!

An emotional episode where Rob speaks about a story he heard from a family member. He talks about how the story resonated with him, its wider meaning and the lessons it reminded him of, including love, gratitude and communication.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS
Last Saturday a young man left his home and was involved in a road traffic accident as a pedestrian. He was taken to hospital and underwent major brain surgery. He was subsequently diagnosed with brain stem death and was being kept alive by the ventilator. The family were asked if they would donate his organs to help others and they agreed. He was given one more night on the ward. However, miraculously during that night he began to breathe on his own.
Rob would not have heard this story if he had not kept lines of communication open with the person who told him. It was a lesson for him in relationships, communication and especially listening.
As a leader, you can't get involved in everything but what you can do when you come across a situation is ask yourself if there is anything you can do to help. When Rob heard this story one of the things he could do was make a phone call to someone he knew. Rob then also decided to make a post about Lewis and his story and received a lot of heartfelt, positive responses.
It's so important to always nurture the relationships with those you love and keep those people close. Always part ways on good terms, you don't know what may happen in this world.

    BEST MOMENTS

“We have to be willing to communicate and willing to listen"

"Stay close to those you love"
