Episode 347 - Daniel Morcombe & the ‘Mr Big’ Plot

Episode 347 - Daniel Morcombe & the ‘Mr Big’ Plot

When a 13-year-old boy, out shopping for Christmas presents, disappeared from a bus stop in Australia’s Sunshine Coast, police were initially slow to suspect foul play. They had no idea what this investigation would become.

The revelations that would come over the next decade would spark one of the country’s largest ever police operations. And in its dramatic climax, it ended in one of the most controversial investigative techniques we’ve ever covered – the very ethically murky “Mr Big”.

Episode 346 - David Berg & The Children of God - Part 2

Episode 346 - David Berg & The Children of God - Part 2

If you thought Part 1 was bad – just you wait. Last week we talked about the origins of one of the world’s biggest cults. And this time, we look at how that influence and control bedded down – and seduced so many of the most famous people in the world.

We’re talking about sex magic, incest, chid abuse, demonic possession, and Fleetwood Mac. It’s time to close the book on the Children of God.

    ShortHand: The Bone Wars

    ShortHand: The Bone Wars

Espionage, treachery, sabotage, pistols, explosives… if you thought the history of palaeontology was just dusting off dry old bones – think again.

This is the crazy true story of naturalists Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh, who sacrificed everything in order to become bone daddy number one.

Episode 345 - David Berg & The Children of God - Part 1

Episode 345 - David Berg & The Children of God - Part 1

Communes, propaganda and child abuse are not uncommon in the world of cults. But what made David Berg and his “Children of God” so unique was the effectiveness of their implementation.

In this first of two episodes on one of the biggest and darkest cases we’ve ever covered, we talk about the rise of arguably the world's most “successful” cult, and what made the man who made the monster.

    ShortHand: Atlantis

    ShortHand: Atlantis

The mythical lost island of Atlantis has puzzled historians for millennia, with its powerful technology, advanced society, and crystal powered weapons of mass destruction. Or has it?

While the lost kingdom was first mentioned by none other than Plato several millennia ago, its existence as a real tangible place has only been taken remotely seriously for the last couple of hundred years. So what turned the tide and led to an allegory for the importance of a well run government turning into a full blown aquatic conspiracy?

Hey.jenny.hey ,

New fan here 🙋🏼‍♀️🕵🏼‍♀️

Just listened to the first Halloween episode and wanted to let Hannah know that she’s not the only one laughing about the name Peter Folding and I understand that she was bummed about not making a joke about that earlier 😹👍

Rona-Q ,

Disrespectful and inappropriate

I used to love RedHanded and even went to two of their live shows. However, I can no longer ignore that they are solely focussed on making money and seemingly have no respect for the victims of the crimes.

The constant interruptions are inappropriate and some of the commentary is honestly disrespectful and shocking. I can no longer support this podcast.

AliceNVada ,

Very disappointing downturn

I listened for several months and was sorely let down by the cultural ignorance (surprising considering Hannah’s anthropology degree that she keeps bringing up), sexualising serial killers, plagiarism (almost word-for-word from a Guardian piece, iirc, about Gayle Newland), and racist Western views about non-Western communities (Suruthi is of Indian origin, but she’s clearly only equipped to operate from a Euro-American point of view). This podcast has big “True Crime Brain” energy and not something I would ever feel comfortable recommending in good conscience.
