In this episode of Safe Space, GUM’s Editor-in-Chief, Graham sits down with Valentine and Aster, the trans officer and non-binary officer, respectively, of GULGBTQ+. In this conversation, Valentine and Aster discuss the normalisation of transphobia in modern media, and the failure of the government and the Gender Recognition Act to protect trans and non-binary people. Released on Transgender Day of Remembrance, this episode also discusses the importance of trans folk having their own spaces at university to connect with other trans students, and the role others within the LGBTQ+ community must play in ending the culture of transphobia which remains deeply entrenched in the UK.

Looking beyond the university experience, this podcast explores activism and burnout as a person of colour, self-identity, and the problem of online performative activism in response to Black Lives Matter.

The Sexual Violence Epidemic at University - Successful Women at Glasgow

In the first episode of Safe Space, GUM's Co-Chief Lara sits down with Annie from Successful Women at Glasgow. In this conversation, Lara and Annie discuss the culture of sexual violence on university campuses and what initiatives SWAG are working on to keep students safe. Moving beyond university, this conversation also explores why women are statically unlikely to come forward as survivors of sexual violence, and the perpetuation of victim blaming.
