I LOVE this podcast.....BUT.....i want to hear Kelly‘s own story!!!!!

Good pod, room for improvement

I am enjoying this podcast so much in terms of learning about these badass athletes in sports that I don't normally follow. I am mostly a soccer person who doesn’t watch much else unless it’s the Olympics. So, I’m thankful that this podcast is introducing me to some of the greatest athletes that I wouldn’t hear about otherwise.

BUT….we're three episodes in and I have yet to hear the groundbreaking social justice conversations KO promised. This most recent episode with Candace Parker was awesome not only because I learned about Parker and her career but also because she mentioned racial and gender inequities she’s had to deal with. KO’s go-to topic seems to be gender inequality for obvious reasons but I just wished she’d ask the hard questions about other topics as well and get a little uncomfortable. I wish you could find a balance between light-hearted career highlights discussions and serious and important social justice topics. I wish she would have asked Chloe Kim about race and more about the economic difficulties her family faced when she was younger. Parker gave numerous opportunities to talk about the African American experience too - but Kelley tended to quickly move on to topics she could relate to. Even more importantly, I would have loved to hear Alex Morgan and Kelley talk about the anthem debate and BLM. They’re close friends, comfortable with each other, you can always edit stuff out - it was a missed opportunity given how topical it would have been, even if it was recorded before the Challenge Cup.

Speaking of the Challenge Cup: I’m not sure you’re aware of the fact that KO lost a good amount of fans following her standing proudly during the national anthem at the NWSL tournament this past month. Lots of people are rightfully talking crap about her and this podcast online because the growth she promised before the tournament (in reference to BLM) has not been visible yet - neither in her personal public behavior or on this podcast. She’s never hosted a podcast before, sure, but if you want to be the face of a show you promised would deal with important topics, the audience expects more.

If you made it this far into this review, I’d like to end on saying that I will continue to listen because I do love these athletes and conversations but I will not shut up about what I said up there. It’s important.
