The Plight of Phoebe Handsjuk Pt. 2 Not Ur Mom's Crime Pod!

    • Wahre Kriminalfälle

Now when we left off, Ant had just arrived home from work on December 2nd and noticed that Phoebe was not in their apartment despite all of her belongings being there, including her purse and keyfob that she would need to enter the apartment again after leaving. Ant arrived home at around 6pm and shortly before 7 pm, the concierge in their luxury apartment building walked down to the trash refuse looking for a broom. However, she was unable to easily push the door open. She had to bump it with her shoulder to get it to open enough to make her way in. Once inside the room, she spotted what she initially thought might have been a mannequin, but then she saw blood trailed all over the room. She backed out of the room and panicked; she took a second look to make sure she had seen what she feared she had. Then she ran for help.

The body in the trash refuse room was Phoebe’s. Phoebe had somehow managed to make it into the trash shoot on the 12th floor of her building feet first and plunged 40 meters (which converts to a little over 131 feet for Americans) and into the building's trash compactor. Although the compactor at the bottom of the trash shoot severed Phoebe’s right foot very badly, she had survived the fall. She crawled around that room in the dark trying to escape and get help but unfortunately, she ended up bleeding to death before being found. According to the Herald Sun newspaper in Victoria, there were two witnesses that claimed Phoebe’s Boyfriend Ant behaved very strangely on the night of her death and the days following it. Detective O'Brien, one of the officers that interviewed Ant on the evening that Phoebe died said that Mr. Hampel appeared to be crying during the interview, however, there were no observable tears running down his face at any time. Ant was also said to have sniffled a lot but he never showed an excessive amount of mucus that one might expect to see from an individual that is weeping. Detective O'Brien said, “His eyes were not bloodshot or red and his face appeared quite normal."

According to Ant’s longtime friend Vanessa Levin, Ant and Phoebe’s relationship was rocky and claimed that Ant could "come across as possibly verbally aggressive". Vanessa said it also appeared that Ant seemed to enjoy the many mourners that visited after Phoebe’s death and she found that “odd.” The Coroner Peter White decided that Phoebe had climbed in herself. He recorded her death as death by misadventure. There were no fingerprints on the trash chute door that Phoebe supposedly “climbed into,” and no CCTV footage from the time of her accident. Her family doubts that it was even physically possible for Phoebe to climb into the chute feet first.
